Ditto. Never found a need to replace stock Fender pickups. After all, I bought those guitars because I liked them just as they were. If I felt I had to spend another hundred or two to make a guitar right - I wouldn't want to buy it.

Far as builds and projects are concerned: I'd hate to be confined to just one pickup maker, but if for some weird reason I was I guess I'd go with BareKnuckles. I especially like their single-coils, and amongst those their Sultans and Apache sets make my heart sing.

Mind you, they're pretty expensive even on home territory, and a bit over the top at export prices. I can see why Martian didn't include them on his list. (So nice to see you around the place, by the way, Martian. :) )

Cheers - C

I agree that different pickup makers excel at different types of pickups. This is very true.

That being said, I'm left with a question. Why no Curtis Novak on your list of pickup makers? They should be! He is so busy making pickups he's abandoned his refinishing sideline completely. That's the trouble with these polls, you can't possibly include everyone that should be on them.

Martian, I chose Seymour Duncan (not Duncan Design) because when I've used them as replacements they always sound better than expected. Fender pickups are tied as Fender guitars sound great with Fender pickups (some Squier guitar and bass pickups aren't up to Fender sound-wise so dropping a SD in those instruments really helps, then to quote you my favorite Martian, this is IMHO YMMV)

Isn't a pickup just wire wound around a magnet?

I have used--and loved--everything from stock pickups to boutique manufacuturers to cheapie replacement.

My individual favorite pickup of all time is a Mighty Mite P-90 I bought off eBay for $20.00
I put it in the neck position of my Telecaster...I should track down a dozen of these pups and start building Screamin' Armadillo signature model Telecasters, lol...

I also love the Pete Biltoft Vintage Vibe SP90 pickups (boutique) I picked up off eBay...they made my Strat fat and sassy, while retaining the Stratocaster spank and sparkle we all know and love.

As far as stock, the flat-pole bridge pup on my hecho-en-Mexico Tele is everything a Telecaster bridge pickup is supposed to be--and although I periodically wonder if I could get something "better", every time I flip that little switch, I realize, "Nope, can't get much better than that--and what would 'better' entail, anyway?"

Although I have other guitars of varying pedigrees (all with different types of stock pickups), I think these three anecdotes pretty much say it all about my tastes. I don't care who makes it, just what it ends up sounding like.

My sentiments exactly. And the same goes for all guitar parts for me. My favorite single coils come from stock Squier Affinity 2000 made in Indonesia guitars. Over the course of a year, I'd bought 3 of them mainly for the pickups. I didn't pay more than $60 for each guitar. Those are the pickups I'm pairing up with the Atomic Humbucker.

I feel ya on that one brother.
