Although this is tragic and it has hit me as hard as losing a good friend would,it takes a tragedy like this that goes global in its scope to make people really sit up and notice that even someone who appears to "have it made" and have all the riches and happiness one could wish for, could be in virtual agony inside, suffering from the horrendous pains of depression.Robin Williams death was probably not all that big a surprise for those closest to him as they could see the silent tears behind all his madcap and manic behaviour. It only goes to show that even those who appear to not have a worry in the world, can feel that they have nothing to live for and even though the lives they are leading could be the envy of millions, they can be living in the depths of despair thinking that their situation is hopeless and beyond help and consequently despite all the love and support that may be surrounding them, something inside tells them that trying to beat the depression is futile and they choose to end the torment by their own hand. Please God his death may not have been in vain and governments finally start putting more money into the real serious issue of mental illness and depression because it has almost reached epidemic proportions but it's only when someone as beloved and as unexpected as Robin Williams takes his own life that people really sit up and take notice.

I dealt with severe depression for years and if it wasn't for a very supportive family and professional mental health experts,I doubt I would be here today.

It is not clear that his suicide was due to depression. Even if he had depression, and even if was a contributing factor, jumping to the conclusion that with better treatment for depression, he wouldn't have ended his life is unfounded. It might have been an impulse action, it might have been substance abuse related, or it might have been a rational decision. We do not know.

Well it sure wasn't his stock portfolio taking a dive.

The man suffered for years with a debilitating and severe depression, and its associated crutches. It's not hard to make a pretty reasonable assumption why.

It's just so sad that someone who you feel was better equipped than most to make it through the world's craziness, and life's frustrations, by finding laughter in everything, clearly was as ill equipped as many of us.

How do you know? Were you his psychiatrist? Or are you repeating what others say without trying to find out whether it was true? Baaah.

And now it has gone from depression to "years with a debilitating and severe depression". Why do people feel a need to turn a feather into five hens? Was that your doing, or were you actually quoting someone?
Here's what Robin Williams had to say on the subject:

Robin Williams wrote:
I volunteered to be on the cover of a — I think it was Newsweek, for their issue on medication. ... And when the guy said, "Well, do you ever get depressed?" I said, "Yeah, sometimes I get sad." I mean, you can't watch news for more than three seconds and go, "Oh, this is depressing."

And then immediately, all of a sudden, they branded me manic-depressive. I was like, "Um, that's clinical? I'm not that." Do I perform sometimes in a manic style? Yes. Am I manic all the time? No. Do I get sad? Oh, yeah. Does it hit me hard? Oh, yeah.

I get bummed, like I think a lot of us do at certain times. You look at the world and go, "Whoa." And then other moments, you look and go, "Oh. Things are OK."

Again, we do not know why the man ended his life. Depression could have been a factor, and if it was, it could have been a major factor. That's not enough to jump to conclusions. At least let the body be buried before spouting speculations, 'k?

I guess you need to be a real dick to get into an internet argument like this, so go ahead, be a dick by yourself.

Further proof that living in USA (or any so called 1st world country), having money, fame, success, power, travelling the world, meeting important people, having all the creature comforts, all the mind altering substances you can take, all the things that humans the world over foolishly think are going to bring them happiness .... do not deliver on the promise. They do not a happy life create. We are completely deluded if we think they will make us happy. They can make us comfortable but they can never even come close to making us happy. There are only a few things that contribute to happiness and I have mentioned none of them yet. Love is the biggest one by far. Second spot and way down on the priority list is health. I think he must have felt unloved. Or perhaps he had recently been diagnosed with a terrible illness and was looking down the road at a long, slow and painful exit. There's no way to know for sure. We have no way of knowing what goes on in someone's mind and it's none of our business anyway.

Sorry to see you go, Mr. Williams. We enjoyed your antics while you were here.

I don't really give a rats-ass about the selfish and cowardly act of suicide, especially discussing it on a music forum. This crap might be alright on facebook, but has no place here at all.

@ Shimmilou. That has to be one of the most callous, insensitive and ignorant posts I have seen on this forum. You obviously are completely void of any understanding of depression and/or suicide and the complexities involved in them. After working with people with varying degrees of disabilities for over 30 years and now working closely with people suffering with severe chronic pain I have seen people at the absolute lowest mental states of their lives.I've seen first hand the heartbreak that a bright energetic 13 year old boy faced when he was told that he was permanently paralyzed-he literally starved himself to death as he lost all will to live.Depression can completely consume anyone at any time-even you God forbid-and they have little or no control over it.Before someone decides to end their life, they don't arrive at the decision without days or even months of soul searching and mental anguish deciding on whether or not to go ahead with it.One that commits suicide doesn't do it from cowardice, quite the opposite as it takes a tremendous amount of resolve to bring oneself to go through with it.People don't do it to be selfish either, they are in such a low point in their lives and their problems appear to be so unsolvable that they actually believe that they would be doing their loved ones a favour by doing away with themselves and ending being the burden that they perceive to be on their families.

Please God you or any of your loved ones never becomes stricken with deep depression as a loved ones depression becomes a family's most consuming problem and the suicide of a loved one can literally destroy a family because people inevitably start blaming themselves or others.I hope that you are never so despondent that you end up standing at the bathroom sink at 3 A:M with a bag containing enough medication to kill a half dozen people and through either a moment of sudden lucidity or Devine Intervention flush the whole works down the toilet-I have and consequently I can speak with a great deal of authority about depression and suicide and I often shudder and shake as I am doing now when I realize how close I came to going through with it.

BTW: People have been posting topics not pertaining to music on this forum since its inception and a topic such as this deserves to be discussed more than just about any other non music topic.

So sad to hear of his death. Will always remember him as Mork from "Mork & Mindy".

This isn't #$@*&!% facebook, it is a music forum. It is callous, insensitive, blah, blah to post crap like that on this forum.

Yeah, and non-music topics have been getting deleted lately (righfully so). Maybe the mods are on vacation, but this is not the place for stupid crap about health, personal BS, religion, etc.

It has far more place here than righteous douchebags forcing their religious doctrinal crap down other people's throats.
In my view, there's nothing cowardly about taking one's own life. No one else can lay a claim to owning it. If you're not free to decide over your own life, you're a slave.
If we believe someone is compos mentis enough to vote, they also should have the ultimate say over their life.

I do not know why Robin Williams chose to end his life, but I fully respect his choice.

Nope, it is no different. No one can force anything "down your throat" by simply posting their belief.....comrade.
