A Troubled Soul not uncommon in comedians think; Fatty Arbuckle, Richard Pryor, Jonathan Winters, W.C. Fields, John Belushi, Louis Anderson, Doodles Weaver, Freddie Prinze, Charlie Chaplin, Chris Farley, John Candy.

While not all these comedians 'offed' themselves, they nevertheless went through extended bouts with chemical dependencies, alcoholism and/or severe depression. It seems to often go hand-in-hand with the Funny Gene.

My best memory of Robin Williams was a Live Performance he gave in the '70s. I was dating a girl who pestered me to take her to his upcoming concert. By the time I got around to buying tickets, the best seats remaining were on the aisle, 2nd row from the back !

We got to the theatre before the show and she was horrified at the seats... started whining that I should stand out front and see if there were any scalped tix to be had w/ better seats... I refused but was thinking: "Shut up B*tch... YOU wanted to see the show and here you are... !!"

Anyway, Robin Williams came out, grabbed the Mic, jumped off the stage, ran to the back of the theatre (just 3 feet away from us), and shouted into the Mic "HA...HA... and you people in the Front Row thought you had the best seats !!!..."

He then proceeded to do his entire 3 hr. show from the aisle at the back of the theatre, almost within arms reach of us.

My date was thrilled... I dumped her the next week !

R.I.P. Robin and Thanks for the Laughs !!

cheers!

Tragic.

Many icons of the entertainment field handle neither success nor failure very well and those demons apparently compelled Mr. Williams to a premature demise.

RIP

:(

When he did his last stint in rehab in early July, he
didn't look too well at all.

Rest easy, RW. :(

Add Tony Hancock and Spike Milligan, Lenny Bruce and others I can't recall right now. They used to call it Manic Depression, now it has a more PC name, devoid of any useful description, lest it make people feel like 'victims'. As if a nomenclature can make any difference. Often the manic phase fuels the creativity, and then the crash... Which is where the substances often come in.

Williams described Johnny Winters as his idol, mentor and friend. He was also a good friend of John Belushi, and Belushi's death caused Robin Williams to stop doing drugs at the time.
But to my knowledge, while they might have had depressions or similar ailments, neither of them deliberately ended their lives.

If it's what he really wanted, I am glad he was able to exit by choice. He had done more than enough for the world, and owed us no more.

great story Lightnin, and something that sounds totally Robin Williams.

I loved everything he ever did, even his serious movie roles. He was a very talented guy.

Sucks to know that someone who made so many people laugh had such a dark side fighting with him.

I hope he's at peace... as said, there is now less laughter in the world... sad day.

Such a tragic loss... I still can't believe it...

Here is a hilarious You Tube clip of Robin Williams from the TV special "Inside the Actor's Studio", where he just starts riffing into different characters and cracking everyone up. The best part is around 5:00 into the video where he borrows a lady's shawl from the audience, and just does incredible improvisation right on the spot!

He was a very funny fellow and he always remembered the troops with numerous USO tours. Made a lot of fellow service members laugh when they needed it most!

RIP Robin.
