Tough choice, there are so many good ones out there...

For me, I'd say it's a toss-up between Alphonso Johnson and George Porter Jr.

Here's George w/ my friend June Yamagishi at my fav New Orleans bar - The Maple Leaf. We were at the show and it was amazing... !!

'Course then, there's the best Bass player no one ever heard of... Corey Duplechin - here at the Rock n Bowl w/ Tab Benoit Thanksgiving weekend a couple years ago... we were there... they played 'til 4:30am... what a night... !!

Probably not everyone's picks, but like I said... tough choice...

Cheers!

This is certainly a Rock-centric group w/, all their good choices, but these are certainly but a fraction of all the Bass talent out there among all genres...

A few perhaps broader folks named Jackson aka 'Jaco' Pastorius.

Image

Jaco was to the Bass what Hendrix was to the guitar bringing a whole new dimension to the instrument, especially w/ his ground-breaking use of harmonics.

The documentary of his life, produced by Robert Trujillo of Metallica, is currently on Netflix.

A sad report on Jaco's ultimate diagnosed mental illness - Hypomania. Many believed this also fueled his incredible creativity, but led him to ever increasing erratic behavior such as living on the street and sneaking on-stage at a Santana concert in Florida in '87 to try and play Bass.

Given the Heave-Ho by Concert Security, he made his way across town to another club where, after being refused admission, tried to jump through a glass door where he was accosted by the Bouncer and beaten unconscious. He lapsed into a Coma and despite a favorable prognosis, succumbed to his injuries a few days later.

The Bouncer later pled a 2nd degree murder charge down to manslaughter and because of no prior record was sentenced to 22 months. Time served and Good Behavior saw him released after 4 months.

A troubled Genius like many uber-creative people we've seen though History.

Cheers!

I saw this band open for Madonna at Soldier Field in 1987. 2 cool things happened, this bass player blew me away with his incredible style of playing and an old friend Patrick Leonard was playing keyboards stage right for Madonna. Very glad that I went to the show. 8)
