I don't know if I have just one favorite to be honest. there are just so many to choose from. If I had to truly pick one though, I would have to go with Dusty Hill , the brother from another mother from ZZ Top. I'm surprised he hasn't been on this list yet.

From about 1975 to 1981, Geddy Lee was the supreme being of bass guitar. Nobody has compared since, and I even think he took it a little further than the great Jack Bruce.

A couple of other greats are Jerry Scheff and Jaco.

Greg Lake, bass guitarist/vocalist for prog-rock bands King Crimson and Emerson Lake & Palmer. primarily a guitarist (like Noel Redding of the Jimi Hendrix Experience) he took on the bass guitarists role at the urging of the members those bands.

Many great bassists have been mentioned in this thread. My pick is a guy so underrated that if you enter his name in a forum wide search it only comes up one time... Robert Deleo. Listen to Tiny Musc again. He has a unique style, very melodic.

Here's a list to my top 5:

Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order)
Simon Gallup (The Cure)
David J. (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets)
Mick Karn (Japan, Dalis Car)
John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin)

These individuals have been a tremendous influence on me and my playing style.

Good call. STP. A friend recently joined an STP cover band. They sound remarkably close. That band ruled during their 5 album run.

Some weeks ago I discovered a band called "Itchy Poopzkid" from Germany.
Stupid name, but very good music and now the bass player, called "Panzer" is on my top 10 list of bass guitar players.
I think I´m the first american listening to them

Tough one since there are many greats, especially if you consider just bass guitar and a person who mastered one particular genre. So I broadened my thinking to at least competent with several genres and also able to play double bass at least reasonably. That led me to (already mentioned) Stanley Clarke, who I've heard play hard fusion, more traditional electric Jazz bass, acoustic bass on traditional Jazz and also classical music on double bass.

Tony Levin also comes to mind and there are others. On the other hand, I rejected (on the basis of "pick one") one of my top 3 contemporary bassists, Christian McBride. He's done some bass guitar work of late but it's not quite his thing (yet anyway) and he pretty much sticks to more conventional Jazz. There's Jack Bruce and I know he did more than just rock but that's his primary output. He was a big influence on my deciding to pick up a fretless and master it. Jaco and and Jamerson ... legendary to say the least, but it all came back to Clarke in terms of (from works I know about) overall versatility.

If I had to pick only one, it would be John Entwistle...he was by far, my favorite bass player of all time. That said, other notable favorites would include;

Roger Waters
Jack Bruce
Donald "Duck" Dunn
John McVie
Tal Wilkenfeld
Paul McCartny
Sting

Last but not least, someone that I doubt anyone here has ever heard of; Jeff Bohne...bass player for "Under The Gun" and "The Electric Beer Band" (both of the bands I currently play in). Jeff is singularly one of the best bass players I've ever known, let alone had the pleasure to work with. He's got the chops to play virtually anything from country to metal to funk and pretty much knows just about every popular tune written in the past 50 years...you name it, this guy can usually play it right off the top of his head. In addition to being a sensational bass player (not to mention proficient on rhythm guitar and keys), he's also one of the nicest people I know and a very dear friend for over 10 years now.

Pino Palladino.

Played for Paul Simon, Joe Walsh, The Who, Eric Clapton, Hank Marvin, David Gilmore, Don Henley, Jeff Beck, and a list of who's who, making many lists of favourite and/or best bass players. This dude can do it all from Rock to Jazz and everything in between. He's here, he's there, he's everywhere - it's Superbassman! :D

Here's Pino:

Here's the Welshman with Nine Inch Nails:

There is one standout bass guitarist missing from these pages. I was watching a TV show about Rick James the other night and realized in spite of his bad behavior bad habits bad choices, he could write bass-lines that are crazy good.

No one has mentioned Nathan East, Jazz bassist and founding member of Foreplay. He plays for Clapton these days.

Colin Hodgkinson is a pretty good bassist. He plays with the Spencer Davis Group these day, I do believe. He's also played with Alexis Korner, Jon Lord, and a bunch of other artists.
