Lots of good answers, but this guy (along with rest of the Dregs) blew my head open in the late 1980's. Holy crap, this guy is an AMAZING player.

Andy West of the Dregs.

While not impressed with the rerun topic I am impressed someone brought up David Hood. He's just as good a name to throw out there as any. A solid, under-rated and often overlooked player for sure.

So is Jerry Scheff. Both Hood & Scheff have had long careers playing a bunch of different type stuff. It is easy to be good if all you play is one genre of music with the same people over and over for decades. What's hard is jumping around on different projects with different players and front people and in that regard Jerry Scheff is a chameleon.

Jerry Scheff is NOT my favorite. I don't really have a favorite. I have a long list of good players that I like. One week I have a favorite then next week it is someone else. I don't have a favorite singer, band, guitar player, movie or TV show. I like a lot of different stuff.

Is your favorite a Jazz or Precision? Favorite pickups? Favorite strings? Maple or rosewood? Favorite this, favorite that over and over and over?

My fave bass player didn't use a guitar - Ray Manzarek of The Doors.

Other than that, much as I dislike the guy, I find Lemmy's rapid bass technique rather refreshing.

Starting on the "Strange Days" album, a studio bass player was used on album studio cuts, from then on. Ray Manzarek did still play the bass keyboard for live stage shows however.

And one of them was...Jerry Scheff.

Probably Victor Wooten.

But there's something on that galloping bass lines and sheer energy of Steve Harris that make me reconsider.

I've always dug her work. Her line on Psycho Killer is simple, but perfect. That chorus run gets me every time. Though I preferred her early Talking Heads Fender tones to her later choices.

Good call Strataggravater, the opening bass riff for this song puts Michael on the list:

Good calls arth1. Many memorable bass-lines for all of the Doors songs. Lemmy carved a giant niche in rock music for his band.

An uncelebrated bass guitarist with a powerful vocal gift, James Dewar from Scotland, bass guitarist/singer for Robin Trower. R.I.P. James Dewar.

check out Robins Marshall head on top of a Fender 2/15" cabinet.
