Like TKOP, I have a few. One favorite is not how I perceive things.

Jack Bruce
Paul McCartney
Carol Kaye
James Jamerson
Tim Bogert (Vanilla Fudge, BBA)
John Entwhistle
John Paul Jones
Geddy Lee
Chris Squire
Bill Wyman (more than he seems)

I like most, if not all, bass players and how they approach their instrument.

I have always loved Macca's bass playing, how he could sing "I Saw Her Standing There" and manage that bass run at the same time just boggles my mind. The Ox (John Entwhistle) is also a favourite.I really liked the bass playing of Larry Graham Jr. of Sly and the Family Stone.Larry had a huge bass sound because he's split his signal between two amps with one amp pushing out the clean signal and his signal going through a very raunchy fuzz unit before going into the other amp. Both of these signals combined to make up one of the heaviest funky bass sounds of the era and it was quickly emulated by many other "funkadelic" bass players, but Larry was the first.

Geddy Lee is also an incredibly gifted bass player but his voice is such a turn off for me that the second that he starts singing I have to tune out.

I don't play much bass but I always enjoyed Fred Turner. He always looks like he's having a blast.

Good choices. Geezer was an influence. Forgot him. Besides, had to leave room for excellent choices from others. 8) Mel sure delighted me.

Had a beer with Roger Glover in Woodstock, NY. It was open mike night and Deep Purple were recording in town and Roger and Ian dropped in and "had a few". I got to play bass on the oldie, "Sea Cruise" with Ian playing the drums. We kept it low key.

Roger also played some song with similar impromptu open mike regulars. It is a pleasant memory. :D

Theres one guy a lot of people have heard, studio player David Hood. If you know the history of Swampers and Muscle Shoals you know him. Played on a lot of popular songs.

If we can have a couple more choices;

Larry Graham--Amazing slap-bass inventor and funk, soul and R&B player.

Bill Wyman--played all those varied things that Mick-n-Keef threw at him with a consistently bored look on his face.

Keith Ferguson (original Fabulous Thunderbirds bassist)--playing that righty first-gen P-Bass upside down and strung lefty (like Jimi). Amazingly subtle, raw and ripping, a true blues musician whose addictions and quirks ended his life way too soon. Reportedly offered the bass chair for ZZ Top at one time, if BFG can be believed (and that's a dicey proposition).

Flea--if Larry Graham and Keith Ferguson were to have a baby with a hyperactive Capuchin monkey, this would be the result. Sock optional.

Preston Hubbard--replaced Keith Ferguson in the T-Birds after a stint in Roomfull of Blues, both as bassist and resident smack addict. Equally at home on upright doghouse bass or Fender solidbody, his addictions led to prison rather than death, but Lordy, that man could rip! Out there, clean and sober, playing with Lou Ann Barton.

And finally, my favorite of all time (tied with my first entry, Tommy Shannon):
Dusty Hill
With a tone he himself describes as "a rhino farting into a trash can," synching those slushy time signatures perfectly with Frank Beard's bucket banging to create a perfect bed under BFG's mysterioso blues, the guy is the whole package--even before he adds his vocals (the best in ZZ Top, if the truth be told)...

My next Favorite on Bass is George Porter Jr.

He has performed and recorded with Soul Rebels Brass Band, Dr. John, Paul McCartney, Robbie Robertson, Willy DeVille, Robert Palmer, Patti Labelle, Jimmy Buffett, David Byrne, Johnny Adams, Harry Connick Jr., Earl King, Warren Haynes, Tori Amos, and Snooks Eaglin among many others.

Porter joined John Scofield's Piety Street Band in 2008 to tour and to record. Jon Cleary and Ricky Fataar are also members of this band. In 2010, he replaced Reed Mathis in Bill Kreutzmann's newest band, 7 Walkers. In 2010 he joined with the Runnin' Pardners in New Orleans, and is a perennial performer at JazzFest. I've seen George perform Live many times in the Crescent City !

cheers!

Noel Redding and Billy Cox could lay down pretty heavy bass lines-I'm glad to see that someone else has mentioned the brilliant innovations of Larry Graham Jr. ,he certainly kicked off a whole new genre of bass playing.
