I would say there is more flexibility with the pickup variations of the Strat, but the lipstick pickup on the Tele is amazingly unique.

This difference may be the easiest way to decide, which is more important to you, the variety of the Strat or the uniqueness of the Tele lipstick pu?

Don't overlook the humbucker equipped versions of either. Nor hardtail strats and Bigsby teles.

Do overlook the humbucker equipped version. What is your overall goal, master plan to collect guitars and play them? First the Strat, then the Tele, then the ES-335, then the Rickenbacker 360/12....Do you want to keep up with the Internet Jones'? What is your endgame here? :?

I own both American and Mexican made Strats and Teles and have played some excellent examples of both these guitars made by the Chinese Squier division of Fender. I'd be willing to bet that for a relatively modest outlaw of money, you'd be able to pick up very decent examples of each model,I've picked up some great used Fenders and Squiers for really fair prices.

Sorry, but the same rational applies here, why not just buy the entire Squier line while you are at it!

I don't want to sound paranoid but I am getting the strangest feeling that I'm being followed.

I have the strangest feeling that the person following you is the reason the terms "Internet Troll" and "Jackassery" were coined.

Johnny, you cant go wrong with a classic vibe Tele. Wisest guitar puchase I have ever made. Got it for less than 3 bills. Sounds better, way better than the American Deluxe I owned for less than 30 days.

No drop-off when switching from bridge to middle or neck. Sounds strong throughout the spectrum. Some people change out the pups, I never will.
Plus the thing just feels real nice...

That said, an American Stratocaster is a great choice, again, better than the deluxe.
I love my mine.

Ah, decisions...

When I started playing electric guitar my first thought was: "I'm gonna be a Les Paul-Player!!!" 8)
Ok, some years later, it's now a little bit different. At the moment I own one Les Paul (and it's not a Gibson! It's an Hagstrom) and an uncountable number of Stratocasters. Why this happend? I don't know! Maybe G.A.S. attack!
What I wanted to say is, that I love strats. I don't own a Tele, so I can't speak against it, but in my whole time as an electric guitarist, the strats always expressed, what I wanted to say with my music. :D
So I would advise you to buy a strat!! But thats my opinion. Good luck with your decision! :D :D :D

Thanks everybody for your sound advice, plenty to think over.
I started to learn on a really cheap and nasty guitar, think once I bought my Les Paul about 3 months after starting to play I new I would be struck with a severe case of G.A.S. All the music I listen to usually involves a Les Paul, a Rickenbacker, a Strat or a Tele. I tried to convince myself once I got the Les Paul and Rickenbacker I could compromise with a Tele or a Strat, I think I have been kidding myself and I am going to end up with both, so I shall enjoy the next few months trying out some different models, just be a case of which to buy first.
I am then hoping that my case of G.A.S will ease as when I am a more proficient player I will have the gear, once I have a Fender amp to go with my Vox, to play every style I would like to play.
I shall enjoy the journey
Watch out for a picture of my new guitar but what's it going to be a Strat or Tele :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:
