Hello All

I am facing a difficult decision, Tele or Strat :?:
I have been playing now for about 2 yrs so I would say I am an intermediate sort of level.
I listen to, and would like to be able to play, Blues, Rock, Pop (60's onwards) Indie, and Punk so a bit of everything. At the moment I have a 2011 Les Paul Classic Custom, a Rickenbacker 620 and a Vox Night Train and a few various pedals.
Some of my favourite players play Fenders as well as Gibsons and Rick's so I am going to need a fender, but a Tele or a Strat :?:
I suspect the answer is going to be I need both, but what do you Fender players think

Thanks

John

I suggest that you try both and decide on what sounds and feels the best to you. Good luck!

I see you have varied musical interests. For versatility, it's hard to beat a good ol' Strat.

Yet, you'll find tele's playing about every genre imaginable. I think the tele might give the biggest difference from what you currently have, if that's what you're after.

Thanks all for the advice so far

A bit more info ref budget, I will be looking at American Standard at the top of my budget.
I listen to a lot of players that play both, so I guess what I am really asking is can I get a Tele or Strat to sound like, for example, The Edge (I realise I will need some delay effects as well), Springstein, Keith Richards and Dave Gilmour or am I going to need a Strat and Tele. :?: :?: :?: :
I didn't mention in my first post, I listen to a lot of Soul Music from the 60's, I believe Steve Cropper was a Tele player :?:
Bearing in mind I will only ever probably sound like a poor version of those great players. :D

Thanks

John

hate to break it to ya, but,,

yes

I would score the strat first, it's going to give you a bit more versatility for what you're interested in. will the tele do it? yes of course.. But a good strat just has has a bit more sonic ground in it's range.

once your budget recovers, start hunting for a telecaster. you will not be sorry having both.

No, almost all of the "sound like" is in your fingers. David Gilmour can almost certainly make a $99 Kramer sound like David Gilmour better than a typical guitar player can make a official Blackie replica sound like Gilmour, even with years of practice.
Sure, there are differences, but they are minor compared to the differences you can make with playing (and effects).

For now, try them out and find out which one you like playing the most. Judge by the feeling more than with your ears, because any differences you hear right now are likely going to be due to adjustable factors more than actual physical differences.

The one thing that does tend to sound different right from the start is single-coil vs humbuckers, so you may want to decide on that first.

I prefer my Tele, but I have the luxury of owning and playing both a Tele and a Strat.

Play several different models of Stratocaster and Telecaster (including models below your budget/price point), and pick the one that feels and sounds the best to you.

Let us know when you choose, and please post pictures!

Thanks Everybody

I think I new I would have to get a Strat and Telly so I will have to get the piggy bank on the go.
If I go for a Mexican Standard I can afford both but I think I would rather by an American standard and save for the other.

My oldest brother has a beautiful Custom Shop 1950's Fiesta Red Strat, he is a big Hank Marvin fan, which feels really good. I think I have only picked up a Tele once and didn't really like the feel of it but loved the sound.

I am currently on a military deployment and am due back in the UK in about 3 weeks, so really looking forward to spending some time in my local music shop, I suppose it's the only way to find out which to buy first. As requested by screaming Armadillo I will post a picture of my purchase.

Further down the line I may look at a Fender amp, so I have an alternative to my Vox any of you Fender players any recommendations :?:

Thanks

John

Check out the Squier Classic vibe 50's Tele. Budget priced ($380 USD) and Rave reviews (check them out on YouTube). I added the 4 position switch to mine for an additional 'humbucker-like' sound.

I can't speak from 1st hand experience on the Squier Classic Vibe, but based on my experience with the Tele, I'd check one out at least. That might ease the budget to get both at once.

If you get the American Standard of either one you won't be sorry. They are both awesome. For and amp I would check out the Deluxe Reverb (DRRI).

Edit: Beat up your brother and take his Strat, then buy the Tele.

A Strat wired such that you can run the neck and bridge together will offer an extra Tele-like sound in addition to the usual Strat sounds.

A Nashville style Tele with a middle pickup will offer a couple of extra Strat-like sounds in addition to the usual Tele sounds.

They're both great guitars in their own way. I prefer Teles, but I like Strats, too. You're really going to have to try them both and see which which one feels and sounds the best to your hands and ears.

The one you like best.

Sorry, I can't tell you which one you like most.

I would say there is more flexibility with the pickup variations of the Strat, but the lipstick pickup on the Tele is amazingly unique.

This difference may be the easiest way to decide, which is more important to you, the variety of the Strat or the uniqueness of the Tele lipstick pu?
