Picked up some poly yesterday. Need to tape off the pickup cavity then do a coat or two on the front this weekend. Going to let that dry good then hopefully do the burst next weekend. I'll post some pics when I've made some more progress. Slow going due to my schedule.

A bit of a busy weekend but I did manage to mask off the control cavities and stick a piece of scrap wood in the neck pocket for ease of handling. I also got a couple of light coats of Poly on the front. I’m using Minwax Clear Gloss Spray which I’m actually pretty happy with. I was a little worried about sputter but nozzles have come a long way I guess. This seems to spray on pretty smoothly.

The grain seems to peak through nicely once the poly is added. There’s a few dull spots here and there which I assume is where it was absorbed into the wood it being basically a first pass. I’m hoping once the burst is done and the final clear coat is on it should look pretty sharp… or at least better than it did.

This week I plan on wet sanding and getting another coat or two of poly on, prepping the rest of the body (checking for areas that need sanding and smoothing) and hopefully doing the burst this weekend.

I assume I use Flat Black for the burst but if anyone has any advice on that I’d gratefully accept.

Thanks for all the support and feedback.

Prepped and ready

After a few more coats, it’s starting to look like I intended. I think it’s ready for the black burst. Filled one small ding on the side and checked around for other things that might jump out on the final goods. I might paint the back black as well and just have the burst on the front but I’ll mull on that for a bit. Just thinking it might look better to have a new finish on both the back and front and I’m not all really that concerned if the back has a burst or not. Plus, if I decide it still looks crap, I can just cover up the green with the black and turn it into a black-strat project.

Getting the black paint this weekend and will hopefully do the deed. Then it’s back to poly til it’s done.

I’m gassing for my own guitar now.

You're doing a nice job. Sometimes when you screw up, you just have to make it right no matter what it takes. I know the feeling.
I would probably add some black to the green tint for the burst, just to ease the contrast. Just a thought.

Thanks Drew365. I had two shades of green and tried to attempt that but I wasn’t happy with the shade on the first green so aborted it. I didn’t even think of adding black to the one I ended up using, that’s a great idea. I don’t have a sprayer and since I tinted the wood then clear coated, I fear it’s too late to do that now. The green does look a little darker in person so my hope is that as long as I’m careful with the black spray I can hopefully avoid a gradient that’s too sharp. My hat is certainly off to the folks that do this stuff on a regular basis.

Been a while so here’s the current situation. They say once you go black you never go back… well… I went black.

The burst started off well and though I got a little delayed for reasons beyond my control, was going as planned. Followed some tips I found online. Masked the top and bottom, did the sides then made a template to mask the main body from overspray. The first attempt went ok but went a little too far in so sanded back to the poly. Came up with a plan to avoid that on the second attempt and the more I looked at the black, the more I liked the looks of it and started to hate the green. Plus, even though I had done a complete refinish on of the green, in certain lighting/angles, the spot where the ding was still looked a bit darker. That started to really annoy me and I figured if I got the whole thing done, clearcoat leveled, and could still see it, It would bug the crap out of me. I love Black strats and figured I have the Gilmour pickups anyway so it just got to be too tempting. Sanded back a bit and turned the black on full blast.

If anyone was looking forward to the green with the burst, I apologize for the disappointment. I’ll be clear coating this for a bit so hopefully the next update will be a near finished project.

Quick update for those who are interested.

Things are finally starting to come together on my refinish. There was a little bit of grain still peeking through so after the first coat of poly, I ended up sanding back a little and hit it again with the black. That helped but decided to live with what was there. This is after the third coat of poly and I’m very pleased so far. I’ve been very lucky with the remaining grain disappearing into the clear coat and having each coat smooth out like glass by the time it dries after freaking out internally that I was getting ‘orange peel’ due to lack of experience. Picked up some P800 sandpaper and will use that between the remaining coats. I even managed to get in the cutaways without any drips and still got a nice smooth even coat as far as I can tell. Glad I went with the black and decided to ditch the green.

Hope to be done with the clear by next week then will have to let it cure good before the final sand, buff, and polish.

So far I’ve spent about $35 so can’t complain.
