August 15th marks the 45 year anniversary of Woodstock. August 15-18, 1969. I was almost going to go to it, but didn't make it. A couple of friends did make it, and loved it. I don't think you'll ever see another one like that again. There really was a great "Summer of '69."

Same here. I was living in Cleveland, a friend went and asked me to go, but I couldn't get the time off from work on short notice, and I had no idea what I was missing.

If you had been there, you wouldn't remember anyway.
Quite the coincidence, I was living/working in Cleveland at the time also.

Was at the University of Vermont studying chemistry that summer. Watched the moon landing from there too. Time flies when you're having fun :!:

I was 8 years old during Woodstock, Aug 15-18, 1969. Plus, my family lived in upstate New York (dad worked for IBM), and Max Yazgur's farm (the site of Woodstock) was 45 minutes from my house!

A few cool memories, and a hilarious story too:

My oldest sister (10 years older than me) whined, cried, and begged to go to Woodstock, but my parents wouldn't let her. An older cousin from Syracuse even drove down to try to persuade my parents and let my oldest sister go, but the answer was still no. My cousin had a psychadelic Volkswagon Beetle with flower decals and peace signs all over it. She wore a headband and had flowers in her hair too.

An older brother-in-law (way before he married one of my sisters) went to Woodstock and remembers some of it. He just remembers a lot of people passing around a variant of LSD called "Windowpane". But the one memory that sticks with him, is when Monday morning came around. Due to extended performances of other bands (not to mention the rain that held things up), Jimi Hendrix took the stage early Monday morning, and woke him up with the immortal and legendary recitation of "The Star Spangled Banner". 8)
Then, the next month in September of 1969, my brother-in-law got shipped out to Vietnam. Thankfully, he survived it over there, and made it home in one piece. He was in one of the platoons over there that was right in the heart of the action. Sadly, even to this very day, he just can't bring himself to go to D.C. and visit the Vietnam Wall. He just can't do it. :(

...and now for my hilarious story:
As I mentioned, I was just a little kid, 8 years old during Woodstock. We lived on a 25 acre farm, near the Taconic State Pkwy in upstate New York. My whole family got the surprise of our lives, when a whole caravan of hippies decided to crash one of our horse pastures. They just decided to help themselves to our land, drive VW buses, vans, Harley Davidson's, etc... and set up pup tents. Now mind you, you can rightfully tell 1 person to get off you land. You can tell 2 people to get off your land. But you are not going to tell about 75-100 hippies to get off your land. It just ain't gonna happen! My dad was FURIOUS! But yet, I thought it was kind of cool, being the naive 8 year old kid that I was. I remember going outside to the horse pasture and started hanging out with the hippies. One of them was making something called "Orange Sunshine" (Tang (powdered orange drink) mixed with LSD), and asked me, "Hey kid, do you want one?" Right at that time, one of my older sisters (who was watching from the window) came running outside, took the dixie cup of "Orange Sunshine" from my hand (I didn't drink it - I never got the chance! ) and gave it back to the hippies. She tore into them about trying to give LSD to a little kid, etc... and then dragged me back into the house and told my parents, who then beat my a.$.$!!!

Butch survived an encounter with the 'what's mine is mine and what's yours is mine, too' generation.

I was inducted into the army on August 19, 1969.

I saw Woodstock, The Movie, in a stinky, folding chairs "theater" in Saigon.

"I hear you are considering changing the zoning law to prevent the festival. I hear you don't like the look of the kids who are working at the site. I hear you don't like their lifestyle. I hear you don't like they are against the war and that they say so very loudly. . .

I don't particularly like the looks of some of those kids either. I don't particularly like their lifestyle, especially the drugs and free love. And I don't like what some of them are saying about our government. However, if I know my American history, tens of thousands of Americans in uniform gave their lives in war after war just so those kids would have the freedom to do exactly what they are doing. That's what this Country is all about and I am not going to let you throw them out of our Town just because you don't like their dress or their hair or the way they live or what they believe.

This is America and they are going to have their festival."

Me too, but that was back in '97. Stupid two-bit barber thought I wanted a hair cut with my shave.

Sin loi!

Actually that beats the open-air "arena" at An Khe right next to the POL detachment, lounging luxuriously on ammo-pallet "chairs" and not being able to hear jackfuckingshit because our snake platoon's cobras were constantly "hot-refueling" as they flew last-light recon sorties for nearly three hours straight.

I wonder if "Charlie" enjoyed the film......?
