i used to only listen to rap/hip-hop when i was growing up as an adolescent, but when i started playing guitar in the late 90's i realized i couldn't really play any of the rap songs i used to listen to. by the time i hit my 20's i started listening to more alternative, classic rock, and even some metal because i liked to play guitar along with those CDs. i had basically abandoned rap and hip-hop...sadly. is it possible to play hip-hop/rap on a guitar then?

Yes, it is possible. Check out material from the Roots, hip hop, all instruments or human made sounds, even the scratching is done by a guy making noises with his mouth. Also Cypress Hill's Live at the Fillmore CD or DVD because they have a band backing them up through half their set as well...

Also check out Dave Chappelle's Block Party. Lots of live hip hop performances with a real band backing up the artists...

listen to Dr. Dre, OutKast, Tribe Calles Guest, Black Eyed Peas, they utilize alot of "real" insturments including guitars, alot of hip hop/rap is based around R&B grooves and the guitar was important in R&B

So to answey your question yes it can

Look into K-os.
He plays guitar and lays some wicked lyrics over it and has an amazing lead guitar player (mainly live).
