There was a thread awhile back that was about the most "Iconic" electric guitar out there. Not surprisingly Tha Fenda Strat was chosen by many. To me it is less of a no-brainer, in that I've found with most gear there seemed to be lot of little subtleties between pieces of equipment. I guess if there were drastic differences then there would be something wrong with that particular instrument or group of instruments.

If all guitars were made for lefties, the better ones would be alright.

When there are drastic differences, it becomes a different instrument.

If you reduce the number of strings to four, and tune it in fifths, it will be called a bass or mandolin, depending on size. And if you say you're a guitar with two necks but no fretboard, i'll call you a lyre.

More drastically, this isn't a 12-string guitar, but a Moodswinger:

Well yeah, the point was not to single out a like instrument from another. I know all instruments are drastically different that's why I consider DJ equipment as T.V. trays for T.V. dinners.

Across the last 60 years, as the market and demand for electric guitars grew, and the music for which they were employed evolved, landmark instruments appeared the nature of which would not be realized for years to come. Many of these instruments were also linked to seminal artists who employed them in their work. The magazine 'Vintage Guitar' provides a monthly review of many of these. Danelectros, Gibson Les Paul, ES 335, Fender Stratocaster, Telecaster, Gretsch 6150, Gretsch DuoJet, Rickenbacker Capris are the first generation of these. Bear in mind that I am focusing on a particular genre. The world of jazz and folk have their own, and thet's another collection all together.
