I've seen the various charts for what numbers for what years, etc. but was just wondering if those numbers are for ALL Fender instruments combined?… in other words… if I had a P bass numbered #400,001 is there any other Fender instrument with that same number, lile a Telecaster numbered #400,001? Or could # 400,002 have been a Strat, and # 400,003 have been a Tele, etc? (Note example made merely to illustrate the question).

Thanks.

This is not the case. There are Korean Fender guitars with the same digits-only serial numbers as American much older guitars.

There are also other designations which do not appear in any of these online charts as well.

For example, my FSR Limited Edition American Vintage '57 Stratocaster (supposedly 1 of 46 produced) has the serial number LE02639. This is not on the back of the headstock like most other strats. Instead, it's on a 'Limited Edition' neckplate:

This guitar was re-bodied by Fender under warranty with a Body produced by the Custom Shop, likely making it one-of-one FSR Limited Edition American Vintage '57 Stratocasters w/ a Factory Custom Shop Body. :D :D :D

What I understand with Ghastly question is did Fender, built say , a Korean Telecaster with serial numbers starting at 0000001 and a Korean Stratocaster with serial starting a 0000001

Same for MIA and MIM and .....

Answer is no .

I appreciate all the posts above, but stratele is correct. I was curious to know if, say, the serial number on my '73 P bass would be shared by it's cousins, the Telecaster, Jazz Bass or Strat. If each instrument has it's own # 400,000 for instance, or if there's only one # 400,000 in the entire Fender lineage.

So it sounds like there's only one # 400, 000, rather than multiple # 400,000s for each model? This makes sense.

Yes

That is why Fender do not have dating for Stratocaster , dating for Telecaster ,dating for Jazz bass,,,,,

Serial numbering in the Fender line has been a topic of popular discussion in these pages. There doesn't seem to have been any rhyme or reason over the years. A recent video of Paul Waller finishing off a Custom Shop guitar shows him casually reaching into a parts bin for a neck plate and installing it on the guitar. Not unlike a raffle drawing. I expect that, for the factory, they'll manufacture a run of neck plates for a particular model and year and keep a record of that series. But there's no guarantee that the serial numbers will run in chronological order with the date of completion of the guitar. We verified this some 6 years back with the Gilmour guitars because the first 500 were to have a book included with the case candy.
