Hello all.
I'm considering getting a noise suppressor, but I don't know anyone who has one that I can try out. I've watched some Youtube videos, but I'd like some other opinions from the forum here if anyone cares to share.

I don't play high gain metal, but I do use a heavy dose of overdrive on occasion, as well as the drive and more drive channels on my HRD. I have several effects in the loop as well. I like to use a lot of dynamics when I play, so I don't want to chop off the really quiet parts, just the noise in between. Thanks so much for your suggestions and insight!

This one gets good reviews.

Well, like so many OPs do, I have asked for your advice, and then decided to do something else anyway. :D

I have an NS-2 on the way. The Decimator was a little too rich for my blood, and I got a really good deal on the Boss. I read a lot about them, and of course the reviews were all across the board in terms of good and bad. I will see for myself I guess, and post a review here for anyone who is interested.

I'll be using a configuration that gates the guitar and the pre-amp. I've seen this diagrammed a couple different ways online, so I'll try all methods and let you know what works best. I use effects both in front and in the loop, so it might take a while to find what works.

My rig is for the most part tolerable at my house, and in my friends' practice space. I played in a different basement the other night though, and my amp sounded like a nuclear reactor*

*I don't know what a nuclear reactor actually sounds like.

I had a ISP Decimator G-String and it worked very well, except one thing--there were some metallic overtones as the gate "shut"...

It was most noticeable during recordings and very quiet sessions. I thought I was going crazy until my drummer/producer asked me, "What's that slight clanging noise at the end of your phrases and licks?" I re-configured my pedalboard, but it still made the noise. We ended up having to re-record two songs because it was too noticeable.

I called another friend who had one, and he said he noticed it, but since he was a Zakk Wylde-style metal player, it fit with his tone.

I ended up going back to my Rocktron HUSH pedal, for two reasons; first, no metallic overtones (duh) and secondly, it worked better for reducing feedback and other noise related to a harp microphone...the Rocktron HUSH (the big blue one) was designed by the same guys that run ISP.

I prefer the big blue Rocktron HUSH over the ISP, but that's just my taste...

I haven't used a Boss NS extensively, so I can't say anything good or bad, except this: When trying out different types of noise gates, I noticed a slight coloring of tone with the Boss pedal (this was several years ago and I don't remember what model; they may have fixed this problem since then).

It sounds like my sister-in-law ringing my doorbell.

Consume away, then leave the remnants for someone else to clean up, pff!  :|

What's the difference between suppression and compression?

A noise suppressor cuts out unwanted bits of the signal path, usually the target is to cut any sounds you don't intentionally play.
A compressor raises the quietest/silences the loudest sounds, "compresses" the dynamics.

Simplified and in a way: they are about opposites to one another.

Ok, so, a related question:

What's the difference between a Bass Limiter Enhancer vs. a Compression Sustainer?

Compression squeezes dynamic range but it doesn't have actual threshold limits. It lends a hand to weak signals while reining in hot signals. Think of it as an elastic band trying to keep signal strength from going above or below a user-set point. The elastic forces the variations in signal strength to have to work harder to affect a perceived difference in volume. Dialling in more compression increases the strength of the elastic bands, forcing dynamic range to narrow.

Limiters maintain a user-set threshold limit but they do not compress. More of a slice than compression. They kind of just hack off the excess. It sometimes helps to think of limiters as kind of like the opposite of a noise gate. That's not a perfect analogy but it sort of works. Noise gate disallows a signal to pass unless it meets a user-set minimum strength. Limiter disallows excess signal strength above a user-set limit to pass.

Some units have both features built into one device.
