I had a Tele Thinline in the early 70's. The Humbuckers were sweet, but the workmanship was horrible. Couldn't keep it in tune so I dumped it. The newer versions are probably a lot better.
I'd go the opposite direction and go with Gibson. I bought a Gibson Les Paul 60's Tribute Studio with P-90's and love it. I've been looking at Melody makers myself or maybe a Studio Pro or 335 Studio. Haven't decided yet. Those Melody are a lot of fun for the money. Real bare bones but sound awesome. If Fender had single coils with as much balls as the Gibson's, I may have stayed with Fender, but now I find I like the shorter scale length of the Gibson to my liking. Try a bunch. It's never really black or white. There's a lot of stuff in between.

I got my hands on a Gibson 50's Tribute SG w/p90's, and LOVE it. Surprisingly so- as I'd never even considered owning one. It's a VERY different sound to my Strat or Tele, but still single coil pickups. Mine was used, for appx $550, but they go for $900 give or take, new.

Gibson voices these pickups very nicely. And they go great with the very light, all mahogany body. It's very resonant, too- nearly as loud as an acoustic when played unplugged! You can get a very nice clean sound from them, or you can make it growl and scream- whichever you want at the moment.

I was actually eyeing up that Chris Shiflett Tele myself.

As others have said- go to a good store, or stores- and try out as many as you can. You never know what will sound or feel right to you until it's in your hands.
