Hey! I'm looking into buying a new guitar. My mim strat standard has done me well for the past 4 years, but I would like something a little different. Right now, I'm debating between the fender classic player jazzmaster, fender classic series 60s tele, fender Chris shifflet tele, gibson melody maker les paul, and gibson sgj. I play ska and alternative mainly. Stuff like rhcp, sublime, nirvana, Alice in chains, etc. So let me know which of these guitars you think would suit my genres best. Also, I would love any suggestions for guitars in a similar price range. Thanks!

First, are you on budget? Second, do you have room for another guitar? Lastly, are you hearing and thinking about all of this for the first time, if so then, pause and resist temptation.

My budget is around $900 and yes I do have room for a new guitar. I've been thinking about this since probably January.

I agree with Jim.
Take some time to consider your decision.
Buying new gear is costly particularly if you don't like what you just bought. You can sometimes recoup your investment at resale by buying in the used market ... if you don't get screwed. New or used, it pays to make an informed decision.

I suggest you consider a Telecaster. Not necessarily that you buy one but that you consider one. They aren't for everyone but if you bond with one it will endear itself to you in a way other guitars can't compete with. Some people hate them. Those who love them love them a lot.

Forward or defence?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I would take your time and -- if at all possible -- try out every a couple different guitars of every model type you are considering.

But I'd definitely try out a couple of Teles while you're going through the process. I think they're great in terms of look, sound and feel. And they should work well given the types of music you like to play. You could probably find a good used American Standard for around $600 or so.

All the bands you mentioned -- with perhaps the exception of AIC and Nirvana -- make significant use of guitars with single coil pickups as opposed to humbuckers. So that may help guide you in the decision making process.

Go play some different types if you don't know the differences. They are all great guitars. I like many different types personally. As long as the guitar is mechanically sound and setup, it can be a cheapo and I'll like it. Get what feels good and don't have several days of buyers remorse like I do. I bought an acoustic a few years ago and had buyers remorse for about a month, then I loved it and still do. I swear, I can get buyers remorse over a tank of gas. Having said all that, Tele's are nice and different enough from a Strat to satisfy that urge for a little strange - yet still feel familiar. I looked at an SGJ not long ago (120th model) and did not care for the neck profile. Not sure if they have it with the 59 neck (I would prefer the thicker neck). Even so I like the LP body better. I did hear a Tele with a Super Distortion-T in it and it sounded amazing. American Standard Tele's are awesome too. But, I can't tell you what to like. Have fun picking one out and no regrets!!

Never mind, you should get this.

or this.

Or two of these.

If you think you need a new guitar and you have the cash, then why not. I'm partial to SG,s but try to go play the and find out what you really like. There's a lot out there.

The one thing that draws me away from a tele is that I'm worried that it will be very similar to my strat. I mean, isn't the telecaster very similar to a strat without the middle pickup? I'm just looking for something that I can't really get with a stratocaster, but let me know if a tele will still do that.

There's the Tele "twang", obtained by picking very close to the bridge.
And while a standard Tele has single coil pickups like a Strat, the Tele pickups are traditionally wood mounted, not pickguard mounted. This affects the tone quite a bit.
As for not having a middle pickup, that can be a plus. Combined with a strings-through-body design and overall heavier construction it helps give the Tele more sustain.

You could also go for a Tele with humbuckers, like a '72 Thinline or a Cabronita. Those are quite different.

But try them out first.

I really only play rosewood fretboards, so the cabronita won't work. How about the Chris shifflet tele deluxe? It has humbuckers and a rosewood fretboard. Any opinions on that one?

Well, I'm not going to try talking you into a Tele, but here's a link to a Tele that is nothing like a Strat. I own one and I love it. It's almost a Gibson with a Fender logo on it. Plus it's pretty reasonably priced.

The Tele's sound is indeed different from a Strat. As mentioned above, the bridge pickup has a loud, twangy tone. The neck pickup, meanwhile, as a more subdued, almost acoustic quality to it which I actually like a lot.

But Teles with humbuckers can be nice, too. They are great for producing that 70s style classic rock tone. Never played the Chris Shifflet model, but you should certainly give one a try if you're interested in it.

That is one seriously cool Tele. I love the way they set the neck, beautiful. Now I have changed my mind, the OP should get two of these and send me one. :P

25.5" scale also. They are made in Indonesia. The workmanship on mine is excellent. I changed out the pots, caps, switch and jack because they were pretty cheap Korean parts, but that didn't cost very much, and I now have a very usable, light guitar with plenty of attitude. I think it's very possible that if I could only keep one of my guitars, this might be the one.

That the humbuckers are body mounted and not pickup mounted, and usually with no dampening, does give more of the old rock vibe, and and the resonance of the guitar body also becomes more important.
A body mounted humbucker on a chambered Tele definitely has a special quality to it, especially for the bass.
