Think of it as a pawn shop being specific to musical gear.

For a number of years our drummer's brother was a manager for a Music Go Round store, so we had a great connection and bought lots of gear for our first PA's through him.

Not the typical experience I know.

I was in a couple of them in my area. They sell on consignment or buy on the cheap like GC. Never saw a bargain in one.

In my experience, which took place over the course of 2-3 years, I always got more for a trade-in at M-G-R than I ever got at GC. I would usually take an amp or two to GC on their beloved Trade-In Weekend (worthless) and see what the boys would give me. It was especially annoying to be low-balled by guys from whom I had bought tons of new gear. I'd put the amps back in my truck and run them to M-G-R and they would shoot me two prices - straight sale or swap sale. I'd always take the swap. And I always got 10-20% more than GC would offer either way. It all adds up.

In a couple of years I bought probably half a dozen amps and a dozen guitars from M-G-R. Once they got to know me they would frequently cut me better deals. I have to agree with the previous poster about M-G-R basically being a pawn shop devoted to band gear, but they definitely got in some stuff that was way above the local pawn shops since they cater to... musicians. M-G-R is where I stumbled onto my Fender Showmaster and a nice (way under-priced) Variax guitar with a nice case and all the bells and whistles.

And just like a pawn shop, sometimes you walk in at just the right moment and get your hands on something really nice. I got this MIM Strat for a song (under $200) and when I popped the cover, found a complete set of Kent Armstrong pickups in it - that was way sweet. They didn't know, they don't take stuff apart.

The M-G-R that I visited was a well established shop, locally owned and operated and had a pretty good reputation. If you are dealing with a newly established business, it could take a while for things to get going well inventory wise, but I would be checking in on a regular basis and get to know the people running it.

You never know!

They sell items on Reverb.com too. I bought a decent
BBE processor from their site on Reverb.
