Giving some thought to getting a base plate for the bridge pickup on my voodoo strat to give it a bit more mid range and bottom end but I don't want it to mud up the bridge middle and bridge position. Any views or experiences?

Obviously, there will be a difference. As to whether it is acceptable to you or not, there's only one way to find out. Luckily, this mod is completely reversible so there is no risk involved.

Just to make sure that I understand what you are asking, you are talking about putting a piece of metal under the pickups?

If I underst you correctly, yes this plate will alter the tone. In what way, I cannot say. I will say that I had a "squeely" bridge pup in a '77 Strat. The metal plate tamed it.

Also, I own a '76 Strat that I made a Faraday cage (shielded), with copper, for the electronics cavety. I've told that it doesn't alter the tone, but to my ears, it did. The best way to describe it is that the pickups sounded compressed in a way.

The guitar sounds good, just a little different, and deffinately quieter.

A base plate on the bridge pup is a nice improvement, with no "mud" at all. It is not a drastic change, but noticeable. This is an improvement with no downside, and easily reversible. It should put a smile on your face.
