Interesting thread, and no one is getting punted over an articulate discussion.
Martian, good to see your post. You are my favorite Martian you know. :D
I have heard many things about Fenders roadworn guitars and bass guitars the most remarkable being that they are very playable and the owners of them love the way that they sound. Kind of makes you want one but they're not cheap lol. I have probably commented on other threads I would rather relic a guitar myself but that in reality is because I have a knack for banging up my guitars not on purpose just clumsy sometimes (like what I did to my new Jackson bass last year, oh boy  )
Now I was going to try and be funny by saying Buying a relic'd guitar is like buying underpants with skid marks already on them and then thought maybe that isn't so funny
Anyways thank you all and you are all welcome as well and so on and so etc.

I thank you. Ironically, I didn't start this thread to bash relic enthusiasts. Rather, it was simply a tongue in cheek post to stimulate some light conversation and have some fun. I could have just as easily said something about someone buying a brand new guitar and inventing some kind of spray to keep the guitar and case forever smelling like new or, the pickguard on said new guitar being scratched from being played with a pick where said otherwise pristine guitar is now 'desecrated' and must be sold ASAP. Notwithstanding, somehow this thread has morphed into where some serious battle lines are being drawn; relics and the mindset: pro vs. con. Unfortunately, I did not know about the above mentioned (apparent) flame war in the Strat Forum regarding same and would have never posted this thread if I did. Frankly, I have no interest in flame war threads and will not be reading it.

Consider my rather lengthy post count. If one chooses to read some (or all) of my posting history, it is readily evident that I am not the accused troll and whatever other negative connotations as has been cited or implied thus far. Consequently, to those who apparently I've offended, I apologize as this was surely not my intent. I'm most confident that any longer time member here can vouch for that.

To the newer member who aren't familiar with me, this is due to the fact that I haven't posted for several months. Why? In April of this year, my wife died from cancer and I, myself have been battling a vicious cancer as well. I underwent a major operation in May where I am still not cancer free and will continue to be am battling with it for the foreseeable future. I have recovered enough just recently to resume posting. As to why I didn't post all my "tales of woe", the fact remains that this is a Fender enthusiasts forum and not a "pity me" symposium which segues me to ask this question: In wake of my predicament, does anyone here think I really would dwell on, much less take any kind of stance on the "validity" of the relic phenomenon? To me, this is like guitar picks: Totally a matter of personal taste where one is NOT better than the other and it all boils down to what gives the individual player satisfaction and fulfillment. You dig?

Very sorry to hear about your loss. Thoughts and prayers your way. And thank you very much for your pickup wiring advice over the years. The 'partscaster' and me owe you and many others here a debt of gratitude

Well, you're laughing, so maybe it is! (And there are vending machines for that in Japan)
My view is that giving your guitar a relic job is like taking your young wife to a plastic surgeon to give her a sag job.

But to each his own. Just because I find the idea of relicing silly, and possibly detracting from Fender's pursuit of better sound and playability, doesn't mean I have anything bad to say about the buyers. I want every man to have the freedom of choosing his beliefs, and will defend that right, also when I disagree and point out that I find the beliefs silly.

I still think it's a fad, and hope that it has soon run its course, like ripped and pre-stained jeans. But if anyone wants to play worn-looking new guitars or wear worn-looking new clothes, that's their choice. That I think it's silly doesn't imply an attack on them - only on their beliefs.

Case candy idea for the Artist series.

David Gilmour Signature skibbies

Skids are authentically recreated

Disclaimer: This is not intended as a personal attack to those who like relics. I just find the underwear comment to be pure comedy gold so applied it to the Artist Series.

Bummer Martian. I had noticed you were not posting much lately. Thinking about you in your loss. Sorry. It can be hard. I have had a couple pretty close friends who have gone through the same thing. I have always appreciated your posts and knowledge.

This thread could have been fun but it ended up like a bunch of grade school kids... "My dad is bigger than your dad" mentality. I had enough of that back with the firestorm debacle. This place should be a fun one to visit, but it seems when it takes this turn, those involved have to throw out on last jab...then another and another...etc. :?

I'll vouch for Martian, a top class member in my book.

At least I will not be a little nancy and report anyone but if I get a single word from Fender about this I will certainly copy them all the offenses and make sure they are aware that people on their website are belittling their customers here and being total dicks in general.

.

Most of us are adults here and calling people such names should not happen on a forum in which several of us have children and grandchildren who follow the forum as well. This is the second recent post you have called people d*#ks, that is not proper.

ebaysux I am happy you like relics why don't you try taking the high road and get over it. Stop posting stupid photobucket pics and calling people names and lengthy diatribes.

Peace to all , John

I agree 100%, but would also add that the 'hen pecking' that occurs on this forum from time to time isn't proper either. I'm just waiting for the rest of the "+1 crew" to arrive.

Okay so here is a solution and we will continue to make money from it. Bottle the scent and call it "relic stench". All the owner has to do is spray it in the case when he is ready to put it away and then "refresh" it when you take the guitar out to play. This way we not only make money on the relic, but on supplying the bottled scent. Is that genius or what? And we can even have the bottle logo say "relic" in fender spaghetti logo script. Brilliant. This way it will be a "true" relic and always have the fresh scent of old socks, beer and cigarettes just like these sucker hobbyist relic lovers have been demanding for their thousands and for some reason Fender missed the boat.

Because we all know deep down anyone spending that much on a relic, wants it to stink.

Boy you all sure don't give up easy. In order to bottle it you'd have to find the stinkiest person(s) in the world, sample them or sample something else? Plus you have to take into account that what stinks to someone doesn't stink to someone else. Good luck finding that 1-1 ratio! Ebaysux your proposal sucks.

I have mixed feelings about relics, which are constantly vacillating and evolving.

I wouldn't pay a premium for one, but if it fits my personal criteria (feels right, sounds good, looks good--in that order), I wouldn't completely dismiss one out-of-hand.

I wouldn't purposely beat the crap out of one of my guitars, but as they gain scars and scratches, I don't think it's worth any more or less.

Thank you for bringing that up because really, it's not a specific finish. Poly and nitro are specific finishes. What you like is called damage and what's worse you like your damage done on purpose. Some people call that vandalism.

Why you post this? Kind of just digging a bit? You normally post great stuff and not provocations after the fires are smoldering!

He's been escalating this issue ever since it flared up about a week ago and making a federal case out of it. Mountains and molehills. For a while I let him get under my skin but that didn't last long. Now I just want to watch him go like a wind-up toy and I don't feel the least bit bad about it because he more than deserves it.
