i picked up an old set of grundig HIFI 500 box speakers from about 1977. the speakers and cases are in great shape but there is a board that is toast. anyone here ever done any work on these (i know REAL shot in the dark but hey doesn't hurt to ask)? i can pm some images if anyone wants to check them out. i would love to rebuild the board and get them back into rocking shape.

By "board" do you mean the baffle board that the drivers are mounted to?

Not sure... maybe? There is a brown board with really thick solder lines (they are usually green now and have tiny built in solder paths). Here is a picture, as you can see they are pretty toast so i was hoping to just build a new one with modern stuff to match, hopefully bringing them back to life.

The board in question is the speaker crossover.

Correct......and an "extra crispy" crossover at that.

ah, one step closer. Is this something that i could find parts for and recreate? I mean, i do good solder work and can build electronics fairly well, but some of the older stuff can't be found anymore.

It shouldn't be too difficult to recreate -- you'll need a schematic to determine the values and specifications of the incinerated components.

Another plan of action might be to replace the crossover outright with a new one. To accomplish that, you'll need the specifications for the original speaker system: max input power, the impedance of each of the drivers within the enclosure, and their frequency roll-off points. Then merely find a crossover that matches those parameters (or nearly so) and wire it into the enclosure.

Also poke around audiokarma.org

I'd imagine it is a very simple network, A coil in series with an RC in parallel to the woofer and a Cap in series with a coil in parallel to the tweeter.

Can you take a picture of any of the tags on the cabinets, if they're still there?

Full model numbers would be helpful.

you could also ask here:

sure can, these are really in incredible shape despite the toasty crossovers. The exterior, the speakers and the grills are just prefect. full story is they were sitting on the shelves of a local thrift store for $20, i asked to plug them in and when they didn't fire the guy said i could have them for $1. so I jumped on them. now i just gotta make them sing again.

If you can read the diagram you should be in business.

You have some awesome speakers there, good luck getting them fixed.
