Here's my own sobering take on the perceived value of collector guitars. We that don't buy the rarest of the breed are left to word of mouth, what we read in magazines, online, ebay etc. Those that do buy these instruments are usually highly successful because they don't throw money away.
Joe Bonamassa bought a couple of rare pristine amps. He said in an interview that he didn't pay anywhere near what everyone was speculating online and in magazines.
I tend to think most of these prices we kick around are the result of venders marketing and rarely paid by the people with cash in hand. The number of people with the money that are interested in spending it on guitars is really not that large.
So what I'm saying is, if you had a '57 Strat to sell, you might be holding it for a long time before you got 20k plus.

You are correct. And that is why I state on this forum over and over that the true value of anything is what someone is willing to pay. However that said, if you know of any all original 57 Strats that are currently for sale for under 20 grand, post where this is and I will take a dozen.

Waiting in anticipation for the links

Hi there,
I have an opportunity to purchase what i think is a 1957 Strat. Its serial # is 024857 and there is a number in pencil on the bottom of the neck 1-58. The guitar has a new neck on it right now, but the original neck comes with it as well. All other parts original. Its Sunburst and the paint is in not so great shape and a few nicks etc. The original neck is really worn. I can purchase this guitar for $4000 and was looking for some advice on what i should do. Just surfing around on line it seems that this may be a far more valuable guitar than 4K. Any advice from the Fender world would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I found an interesting page you may want to look at:
