Hi there,
I have an opportunity to purchase what i think is a 1957 Strat. Its serial # is 024857 and there is a number in pencil on the bottom of the neck 1-58. The guitar has a new neck on it right now, but the original neck comes with it as well. All other parts original. Its Sunburst and the paint is in not so great shape and a few nicks etc. The original neck is really worn. I can purchase this guitar for $4000 and was looking for some advice on what i should do. Just surfing around on line it seems that this may be a far more valuable guitar than 4K. Any advice from the Fender world would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If the neck says 1-58 then I think it would be a 58 or 59, but you must post pictures that are clear.

You will get a much better answer with pictures.

Have you seen what's "under the hood" and established its bona fides?

I would tread very carefully before tendering an offer.

I would think the body alone would be worth more.

If it is a true 57 body and neck you are talking in the $20,000 range and up. That said, $4,000 is a heck of a lot of money to waste on a fake. Have it authenticated by a professional. All you will get here is opinions. Granted some here do know their stuff it is still just a forum and only a professional appraiser with the guitar and neck in their hands can really verify if it is the real deal or not. All we can do here even with good pictures is tell you if it looks legit to us or not. And by other posts like this you will get everything from the negative Nancies who always assume the worst no matter what, to those who are not qualified to appraise the worth or anything but yet choose to post suggestions and advice anyhow.

Thanks all, I will get some pics ASAP. My dad played in band with the owner since they were kids. The guitar has been in that family since '65 and are close family friends, so I'm pretty sure it's original.

For the person who commented new people come to this site and never return, maybe it's those comments that influence someone's decision to not return. Very welcoming!
Thanks to everyone else.

I love fender acoustics, I have several. Including 2 70's f65's. so awesome. I would put it against any flat top!!

A portfolio of detailed, hi-rez pics would be invaluable in establishing the instrument's provenance. Areas of interest include: The bridge and bridge saddles, the trem block, the underside of the pickguard, the bottoms of the pickup bobbins, the pickup and control-cavity routs in the body, the worm rout in the bridge pickup cavity, the pots and the selector switch with all the attendant wiring, the tone cap, the nail holes in the top of the body, the neck heel, the headstock (front and rear), and the tuning machines.

Is the guitar's original case part of the package?

Okay, I will take a stab at this.

If, as you say the owner is a friend of the family and has owned it since 1965, let us say for the sake of the discussion it's the real deal, a 1958 strat with the original everything.

It's worth 20-30K, not 4K.

Now, this is the Morality part of my answer, the person is either retired or very close to it, and you would be taking something, almost stealing it from them, could you live with yourself, and the consequences?
You think you Father would be pleased you took his friend?

Look, If the person is a true friend, you should do the right thing and take to to a classic guitar dealer, have it appraised, let that dealer sell it at action or on a consignment.

And for help you, out of the profits he should buy you a new American made 1957 reissue.

In the long run, your family will be happy, there friend will be happy and you will have a brand new guitar.......and you can sleep at night.

My 2 cents worth is now given and I am off the soapbox, good luck in whatever you decide.

Agree 1K % !!!

While in Business, it's astute to Buy Low / Sell High, take advantage of other's errors or lack of insight.

But, this situation cannot be described as anything other than Personal or Family.

This guitar may be worth as much as $20k - $30k.

Put a pricetag on your Reputation and Self-Respect. If it were me, these are worth well North of that figure.

Make yourself Proud and counsel the Family along the lines of Jeffytunes' advice... except forget the part where he confuses Mortality with Morality...

cheers!

If it is authentic, and sounds like it is, and a family friend offered it to you at that price, I would take it. And are all Fender Strats of that age worth as much as folks are saying, even in that shape? If so, all the better. They would know what the value is. After all, they have owned it for a long time.
As far as pictures, can anyone really tell if it is worth all that by looking at pictures? Probably not, but I can say what my opinion is on this:
WE JUST WANT TO SEE THIS BABY!!!!!!!!!

Yes, all Fender Strats of that age are worth that much (start at 20k ish) and the more complete and original, the more it goes up. As well factory custom colors can have the value go up even more. Things like paint fade which is normal for a guitar like that if it was actually played along with nicks does not hurt the "overall" value too much assuming as stated the rest is all original. Now on the other hand if you find one in museum quality "time capsule" condition the value can be worth 2 to 3 times as much or more to a serious collector and is at the level where it might get sold at a high end auction house and/or go to a celeb or someone very wealthy that can afford it.

If this is the real deal and "fair play" is a factor, then another suggestion is buying the guitar and then putting it up for auction. Collect the ridiculous amount you will get for it, and then give the seller another $5K afterwards ...
