Back to the Original question, I would first want to know the purpose of the gasket.

Is it used on say a basswood body to protect the soft wood from the neckplate digging in?
Is it for the thicker poly paints to prevent cracking?
Is it to stop the tone from leaking out?
Did someone at Fender have a Brother in the gasket business?
Since it is hard rubber, was the a Beatles reference to the "Rubber Soul" Album, and Fenders attempt to add soul to the guitars?
Was it a marketing strategy to get there guitars in Webster's dictionary as an example of "superfluous"?
