I can't imagine there was a great overlap in the fan base.
I still cringe when I think of "Carry On, Wayward Child" going straight into "Going For The One".

Kansas is a prog-rock band. That matchup seems to make perfect sense to me.

This may have been in 1976 I thought this was a weird line up and mixed crowed
Patti Smith. First
Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. Second
Jean luc ponty, Ended it
I went to see Jean luc Ponty as Imaginary Voyage was just released, it was actually a good show

Actually sounds like a great lineup !

I saw Jean Luc Ponty when he was touring/recording w/ Frank Zappa & The Mothers. Together those two really worked well.

cheers!

Another strange lineup I saw several years ago in Memphis was Rage Against The Machine opening for U-2. Other then them both being somewhat "political" it did not seem to me to be similar genres of rock.

We discussed this one awhile back on another thread.

Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck

I thought it was an odd pairing, though, some others didn't.

Couple of years ago I saw Jeff Beck playing lead with The Who's backing band supporting Debbie Harry singing Blondie songs. That was kind of unusual...

Also. I never saw Hendrix live, but my wife caught him back in 1967 supporting Engelbert Humperdinck, of all people. The Walker Brothers and Cat Stevens were also on the bill. Talk about mixing it up!

Cheers - C

It sure didn't sound like a good mix. American country-inspired rock into British psychedelic prog. The "segue" from COWC to GFTO was pretty cringeworthy.
(IIRC, this was the infamous concert where Igor Khoroshev allegedly groped a female security guard and did not collect $200.)

While stationed in Germany, I went to an all-day open air concert at Zeppelinfeld in Nuremberg, Germany on 9/1/79. There were a few relatively unknown opening acts followed by AC/DC, Nils Lofgren, Cheap Trick, Molly Hatchet, and the Scorpions (don't remember the order). The headliner was The Who, but performing right before them was Miriam Makeba from South Africa. I had never heard of her, but evidently she was very well-known. I enjoyed her and her band, but their music was out of place there.

Nils Lofgren s underrated. Molly Hatchet, I could do without.
Scorpions, well, they're sexist as hell, but Rudie Schenker is a god - his riffs have the quality of "how come no-one else did this before?". It's astonishing, really. (And too bad for those of you who can't use your thumb on both the E and A string.)

All-girl rock band Fanny opening for Procol Harum at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1971. Odd pairing, but a great show.

Molly Hatchet is actually pretty cool and they really kick butt live (well they did when I played with them). Years ago we got to open up in Tennesse for Molly Hatchet and Rick Derringer. It was odd because I actually met Rick a few times in Fort Lauderdale and had a few with him but he acted like a total dick at the show. Molly Hatchet was super cool and not only watched our entire show but came up afterwards and complemented us. As far as their sound and playing it was top notch...the two guitarists worked together so well it was "skynard-esk" if you will and I was also amazed that I knew just about every song they did. I had forgotten how popular they were when I was a wee lad. Plus they had a huge gloss white piano on stage and the dude could play the heck out of it.

When I saw Molly Hatchet live, we ended up leaving early. They were SOOO loud, you couldn't hear anything- it was just white noise and weird distortion sounds in your ears. It was too bad, too. This was shortly before Danny Joe Brown had to retire for his heath issues

Far as I'm concerned, nobody else sounds "right" singing for them.

"Fanny" That's even funnier when you consider what that means in the UK!

Well I guess that can happen and I have seen so many shows where the same band sounds great at one, and too loud at another. One example is the first time I saw Van Halen it was so loud and distorted I could not tell a single song they played...and this was at Madison Square Garden. Same with Aerosmith but when they toured with my friends band years later (Fuel) they were so tight it was like a day and night difference.

When we played with Molly Hatchet (I guess this was around 10 years ago) there was no problem at all with their sound and I was literally 6 inches from the stage the entire show. It was amazing and the only disappointing take-away was that I have never had the luck to find another guitar player I could work with the way those two guys did. I really can't explain it..it is just one of those things that amazes you.

I went to see Van Halen in 1995. The Smashing Pumpkins were supposed to open(I think), but well ahead of schedule, out comes surprise band Brother Cane. They were great.
