What is the most strange line ups you have seen in concert?

I was told Dwight Yoakum opened for the Dead Kennedys back in the day.

In 1982, I saw The Plasmatics open for Kiss.

I am not criticizing the music, but I find it interesting how the line ups come from different genres! Either way, it's all Rock & Roll to me!

I saw the current lineup of The Misfits, and they performed a few Black Flag songs with Dez on vocals.

Dez and Jerry are really nice guys, and the club nearly caved in on itself when Depression was played. 300 people packed into a space that's about 1.5x the size of my living room, then the surrounding bar and merch area all moved with the song.

In early '69 I attended an Ike & Tina Turner Revue concert.

Santana was the opener.

I saw Lilith Fair in 1998, and Missy Elliot (rapper) was one of the performers. It was ...... interesting. :?

In 1983, Phil Collins was Robert Plant's drummer for Plant's "Principle of Moments" album and tour. While we are all aware what a great drummer he is, it was very surprising as Collins was a HUGE star with both Genesis and his prolific solo career both being multi-platinum acts in their own right. It always struck me as very odd that -- with basically two huge top acts for Phil to balance between -- that he could spend months away to record and tour for Robert Plant. Just for perspective, back in 1983 Phil Collins was huuuuuuuge.

And in case you wondering...
1) No, Phil Collins did not do any singing. He strictly played drums.
2) Yes, it was an awesome concert. Besides Plant and Collins, there was also Plant's amazing guitarist, Robbie Blunt, who is one of my favorite guitar players. He is awesome.

Early 80's in Buffalo, NY (the old "Aud" - aka Buffalo Sabres NHL hockey arena).

Interesting concert... Southern rock followed by progressive Canadian hard rock/heavy metal.

A few years ago, Yes went on tour with Kansas as their opening band.
I can't imagine there was a great overlap in the fan base.
I still cringe when I think of "Carry On, Wayward Child" going straight into "Going For The One".

I heard that Yes also once opened for Johnny Winter, which must have been even weirder.

I saw Jewel open up for Peter Murphy. No one knew who Jewel was at the time and she just played an acoustic set by herself and asked if we could meet her out by her van after the show to buy her demo so she would have gas money.

I saw the Ramones open for White Zombie. Talk about radically different crowds!

Not seen in concert, but how about John5 collaborating with Lynyrd Skynyrd on their God and Guns album?

Another good one: The original Monsters of Rock tour. had the Black Crowes playing the same night as Metallica. BC got booed off the stage in Rochester, NY by the ever classy Metallica fans. I think the lead singer might have hocked a loogie or two on the front rows in response... ( I say ever classy because Metallica concerts have more fights and more giant chip on my shoulder d-bags per square inch than any others I've ever been to)

Back in the mid '70s,the students union at our uni was a bit out to lunch and they spent every cent of their yearly operating budget bringing in top shelf entertainment such as Rory Gallagher,Muddy Waters,Howlin Wolf and so on,but the strangest pairing was Pat Metheny opening for Roy Buchannan.Metheny played an incredible set where he showcased his fabulous mastery of the fretboard and his soulful jazz repertoire but the magic of his set was broken by a bunch of Neanderthals from a local biker club who fancied themselves as being Hells Angels material but in fact were regarded as being a bunch of burnt out brain dead bozos.Their continued outbursts for "Rock n' Roll" caused Metheny to stop mid song at one point and ask if the audience wanted him to stop playing with that the audience exploded into applause and stood up,needless to say, this shut up the imbeciles.

When Buchannan came on he was pretty loaded on our strong local Black Horse beer but despite that he played an incendiary set and blew up 2 Fender Twins in the process. He wrenched so many sounds from his old Tele without any effects pedals what so ever. His playing made it sound like he had a wah wah pedal,an octave doubler and several other effects but using nothing but his hands making adjustments to the tone and volume controls while he was still playing and his utilization of above the nut bends, all kinds of tricks to get harmonics and other feats of wonder.Too bad that like so many other brilliant musicians, his penchant for living life on the edge finally took its toll on him and we lost him too prematurely.

This was the strangest pairing that I have seen in a concert as their styles are almost blerpolar opposites in most ways, even though each one of them was a master of his chosen genre. All in all it was an incredible concert despite the outlaw biker wannabees almost ruining the show.

BTW: I had just bought the first Peavey Deuce that had come into our province and one of my best buddies, who I often jammed with in the studio of the student's union radio station, asked me if I would lend my amp to Roy Buchannan for the concert as he travelled with only his guitar and rented the amps at every venue.Since my amp was brand new and hardly broken in and knowing how brutal his playing could be on an amps innards,I declined. Even though I could have had the bragging rights that Roy Buchannan played through my amp,I had a gut feeling that I would have been saddled with replacing burnt out components in my new amp and possibly would have to get new speakers too, bragging rights weren't worth it to me.
