This is actually a rough cut of a song my friend and I have been working on. We've been jamming it out for a few of the practice sessions and we keep tweaking it. I'm drumming on this. The Stratocaster doesn't cut through as well as the Guild, but that's his preference. I'm thinking we'll re-record it and get a more cohesive, clearer sounding cut and post that, however, the bones of the song are there, they just need some flesh added.

"the bones are over there"

good start for a rock song James, forgive me if I suggest the inappropriate title lol.

Oh no, suggestions are totally welcome. We had a more organized intro, but this was recorded literally right after we woke up this morning.

We were also thinking of doing the same thing as an outtro, but you never know. I can say my favorite part is 1:35-1:45

I think I may pick up a USB condenser and place it somewhere decent, then just record directly to my computer until I can find a decent 4-6 track tape mixer.

That's a relief. You had me worried that you were going to place it somewhere indecent.

I think my drums and guitars sound fuller in my living room, which has cathedral ceilings and a large space. I generally have my amp on a riser as well.

What I was thinking was using my extra drum stool and putting it in the center of the room with the kit in a corner and the amp opposite it. It's a closed back cab, with daisy chained amps.

How are you recording?
IMHO cymbals are too prominent and swishy; which detracts from the other parts

eg. this was taken from last weeks jam- 3 (2 on kit -1 on congas) SM 57s and one random dynamic mic on guitar amps. Direct to minidisc from desk. A light multi-tap flange effect (Ohm Boyz plug in) mixed in after - just to compensate for no show by bass and keyboards

PS- what was that (DI2) Bollywood/Hawkwind track that followed?

Believe it or not, my SIII is what I used. My friend does have a couple mics, but we lack a PA. Worst case, we plug vox into an old guitar amp and hope no one dies too much.

I'm considering a nice USB condenser. I may record in my room and put soundproofing blankets up.

And the other track is me on guitar and my other friend on drums

Cool stuff , I enjoyed that.

The important thing is to record what you do with whatever's to hand.
Using your phones OK, but you could try putting it between the folds of a towel or some such to absorb some of the hi freq.
DIY improvisations can work wonders - back in the day I got a pretty good Pink Floyd bootleg on cassette by stuffing the cheapo plastic mic inside toilet roll tube stuffed with tissue and gaffer taped atop the light show. (sadly that tape jammed and for a while decorated a stretch of the M4 hard shoulder)

Go for the USB mic cheap as chips now (eg c-1U under £40.00gbp) also 4channel USB mixers at around £60.00

I was gonna get a 4-6 track tape mixer and run one of those tapes with the 3.5mm line on it into my PC.
