I always get my V.G. magazines about 2 weeks behind subscribers in the U.S. do,and I always go to the V.G. website or F.B. site to see what's in store for me.The Aug. '14 issue of Guitar Player also has an article about James Burton but I'm sure that the V.G. magazine article will be much better.Vintage Guitar Magazine is definitely the most informative and well written of all guitar magazines.

Only because you mentioned James Burton ... I saw a previous episode of American Pickers yesterday where they picked what was thought to possibly be one of two stand-up basses used by Elvis Presley's original bass player (Bill Black) from the early 1950's; one is confirmed to be owned now by Paul McCartney, and the whereabouts of the other is unknown. The pickers took it to James Burton who confirmed that their bass was not the other Bill Black bass, but still worth about $2000 anyway. Sorry for the tangent, but it was interesting ...

So Doc, what was the experience like. Who'd you see, who'd you get to jam with, who'd you boink? Do tell, do tell.
Edit; well I hope it's obvious I meant to put this in the 50 years ago thread. But it's still funny here. :)

Is it just me who thinks something is wrong about getting a September issue in the middle of July?

Among the regulars at the WHA???we'd hang out with before the world really came to know who they were Richie Havens, Richie Pryor, Jose Feliciano, comedian David Frye. Around the corner on West 3rd, at the old Night Owl opened the Luv'in Spoonful; walking east on the same street to the Village Music Hall were the nascent Blues Project. It was a happening time. I can't still smell the sausage and peppers grilling on the curbside food wagons.

+1. It was a great read! One of the few magazines subscriptions I have kept over the years. Always good stuff!

I spent a short time living with the Hare Krishna in the Village around '68. There was a massive trash haulers strike at the time. Garbage everywhere. A friend got taken to Bellevue because of an acid od and I visited him there several times. Right out of One Flew Over The Koo Koo's Nest. It was a world unto it's own, that's for sure.

I don't know whether you guys have caught the news, but Manny Roth who ran Cafe Wha? has just been announced dead. He led a long and eventful life, and directly and indirectly he steered the life of many great artists. While the man is no more, the legacy lives.
