As a side note, I wonder if many luthiers deal with the Amish for wood. They have some of the best quality, and they generally discard anything flamed. Sadly, it goes to the fire.

A cabinet maker I know has several thousand board feet of northern White Ash that he has been sitting on. He's waiting to see what happens with the prices before he does anything with it. could be pretty profitable.
I have been offerd some good money for the old American Chestnut wood we have and I think the Ash will go up as well
people who make baseball bats can not even get good Ash. Seem most
players are using Maple and Birch wich many say is the reason so many are breaking now days. MLB has got involved in the issue. Mine is not
worth what the Chestnut is but youn never no because we have been told
it is good quility by the guys at the mill.

You would think that for as long as guitars have been around Luthiers would have experimented with most readily available woods to find some that would do in case of situations like we find ourselves in today. The best woods are getting more and more expensive and more and more solid body guitars are being made from pieces instead of a single cut.

Wow. I was expecting maybe one or two responses to this. I didn't think it would be a super topic of discussion.

Wood being the heart of the instrument it couldn't have been any other way...

Growth rings are affected by weather more than any other factor; though, warmer summers make for wider (less dense) rings... and colder winters make for narrower (less growth during the season)

Many of the historical temperature estimates are based on examining growth rings... one per year in every tree...

Tone woods such as spruce, maple, alder, the various mahoganies and exotics all share the same characteristic of being dense and strong...

The thinner the top and back of the guitar the more responsive it can be to the strings... and, naturally, the stronger/denser the wood the more it can be shaved down while maintaining enough strength to take the abuse we give our instruments...<g>

While solid body guitars don't affect the tone as much... the resonance and sustain of the sound is still dependent on the interaction of wood and steel...
