I can understand having guitars at different price points, but not counting Squiers and left handed guitars, there are 88 models of Stratocasters on the product page. I guess you can't get enough of a good thing.

Wonder if there's any wisdom in thinning the herd and letting Fender Design Your Own give the lead to the buyer.

Fender has taken the path similar to restaurants in Thailand ... where they have 300 items on the menu, AND if you still can't find what you want, they will make it for you ...

Back when I was being Al Bundy a woman asked me if this was all the black shoes we had. I said "yes ma'am, just these 34 different styles." :|

I recall first discovering Guitar Center many years ago and being in awe of all the guitars hanging on the wall.

Then I realized there really weren't that many choices. If we ignore some of the minor variations that distinguish some models then there can't be 10 different guitars on that wall.

Where GC is concerned, you're not going to find many high end Fender guitars. They are primarily marketing Asian,MIM and moderately priced MIA product. That's the focus of their mass market.

I remember the good old days when buying a Strat was so simple, you had a choice of hardtail or vibrato, left or right, maple or rosewood (some years) and colour choice. These days buying a Strat is possible to become confusing ordeal for those unfamiliar all the models.

I wonder exactly how many among those 88 are hardtails nowadays.

90% of which are no different than any other knock off on the wall. Nothing that plays like a Fender should. Still. You're treated better than the bass players.

Back when I was a kid ( I'll be 55 next week ), there was only one model of Stratocaster and the same with the Tele as well. If my memory serves me correctly , this was back around 1972 or so, I think they were only selling for around the $4-500.00 mark ? This was for a brand new model mind you. Of course we also had the Musicmasters , the Mustangs, and the Broncos as well which were much more accessable price wise. My 1st guitar was a Bronce which my folks bought me in 1973 for the sum of I think around $100.00 or so. Plus they had bought me a Bronco amp for around the same price as well.

My memory of 1958 was trem, non-trem, RH/LH, gold hardware, limited custom colors.

Back then profit didn't equal greed either.
