Johnny always considered himself a bluesman, and I certainly agree. But I gotta say, he made a pretty cool rock star as well (of course, the blues were still a great part of it). Witness:

I hate to hear this. I was in process of learning about Johnny's body of work in the past few months and I just ordered the album Progressive Blues Experiment just last week. RIP Johnny.

Sad news--especially as he was one of the major reasons I wanted to learn slide guitar--although I'm not that greta at it, and I don't sound like him.

Condolences to his family & friends.

The first time I heard Johnny play I was floored by his mastery of the slide and the incredible tones he got from that lovely old Firebird. The first time that I saw Johnny actually play was on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert that used to come on very late on Saturday nights.Johnny did a dynamite cover of "Silver Train" from the Stones' "Goatshead Soup" album and he killed the Stones' original version. His covers of Stones' songs were deadly and I always preferred his covers to the originals because Johnny just kicked them up several notches. His cover of "Straycat Blues" from Saints and Sinners is my favourite of all his Stone covers, his vocals sound so lascivious and menacing that he makes Jagger sound like a choir boy.Johnny certainly had a readily identifiable sound not only because of the guitar tone but his inimitable style of playing that stood out from the rest as much as Jimi's and Santana's unique styles. It's hard to lose such a revered guitarist as Johnny Winter, they are so idolized that you almost think that they are immortal, yet they are just flesh and bone like the rest of us,at least his legacy of incredible music will always be with us.I imagine that he is jamming with Jimi again and there are literally Heavenly sounds coming through the Pearly Gates.God Bless you Johnny, thanks for inspiring so many of us over the years with your soulful playing.

Part of my life - - - I grew up in Texas and he was a staple of that music scene. Rest in Peace.

This photo of Johnny shaking hands with my drummer in his tour bus was taken by Dean Zelinsky. The Bro in the foreground is blues guitarist Tommy Ashe. Johnny had just played a blazing set at Taste of Lincoln Ave 2012 just about 2 years ago. I was right in front of the stage, the last time that I saw Mr. Winter.

Like many people have no doubt done this week, I've been revisiting Johnny's work.
The authenticity and credibility of the first albums ( Progressive Blues Experiment/Johnny Winter) is mind blowing. He was the real thing alright.
This is just my opinion but I believe in regard to the Blues, by the late sixties, Johnny had already achieved what Clapton never could.
(I have nothing against Eric, he's great).

Legend he was. Always made me smile to hear him play. Miss him we will.

I love this. From the Mississippi Delta to 70s guitar hero in one song.

Johnny always said that working with Muddy Waters was his career highlight. Here's the full concert at Chicago Fest '81. Johnny comes on at about the 28 minute mark, but sit back and watch it all if you've got time. It's great to see him side by side with his greatest influence.
