I was at one of his shows in March 2014. He played non-stop for over an hour.

Indeed a sad day !!

The World will forever be just a little more gray for his passing !

One of the last of the Great Texas Bluesmen !

Played w/ Muddy, B.B., Bobby Bland, Willi Dixon, Big Walter Horton, Vince Gill, Sonny Landreth, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Jimi and of course his brother Edgar, to name just a few.

Played Woodstock !

Had a thing w/ Janis !

He lived his life in the thick of it all !

I had the priviledge to see him Live twice in the past 14 months:

Even though he had to be helped on-stage, and have his guitar strapped to him, he rocked the House doing a full 3-hour set !

R.I.P. Johnny !

Thanks for 50+ years of Rockin' the Blues !

Condolences to Susie and Edgar.

cheers!

This really upsets me--in more ways than one!

My first "proper" blues album was Muddy Water's "Hard Again", which Johnny was all over--producing, playing, singing backup, arranging songs, getting the band together...those comeback Blue Sky label albums (three studio and one live) Muddy made with Johnny were/are a HUGE part of my guitar-playing, songwriting, harp-playing, band-forming and performing DNA...although they were Muddy Waters albums, I always thought of them as Johnny Winters albums, too.

His "Nothin' But The Blues" album (with the same band Muddy was using for "Hard Again") was a big influence, too...I play nothing like Johnny, but the concept of that band (based on Muddy's band from the 1950's) hits me as the perfect blues group.

I've never been a "fast fingered" guitarist, nor have I really been enamored with many speed-show players, but his ability to play slide so quickly, precisely and cleanly amazes me to this day.

The final thing that bothers me is this: I was hoping to go see him when he came to my area again, especially since he seems to have gotten clean, sober and healthy for the first time in decades.

I've never seen a full, proper Johnny Winter show in the flesh...and now I never will.

I just dug out the old Muddy Waters' "Hard Again" on vinyl...dang, I forgot how "live" and "present" that album is...recorded live in the studio, with everybody mic'd up, but one big mic in the middle of the room to pick up the full force of the band...the best way to record blues, IMHO.
