I really think a wound G would benefit my playing, but I'm not willing to change my gauge, considering re setting up a freshly set up guitar isn't worth it to me, plus I'm not into heavy gauges.

If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

I know D'Addario has a set of 10 gauge with a wound G, But I don't see they have 009s.

you could do it this way if you can't find any sets like that

1: buy your regular strings
2:buy some single wound G strings (Gauge 017w)

like this:
http://www.juststrings.com/dad-nw017.html

That should get you there I think!

Time was Gibson had exactly what you're after, Jim. They used to carry a great sounding set of pure nickel strings called L5 but that line has been discontinued. That's gotta be about 5 years ago by now. The L5 line came in 9s, 10s and 11s and all sets had wound 3rds. I believe the 10s had an 18 and the 9s had a 17 IIRC. Gibson got some backlash for discontinuing the line as it was one of the very few production sets on the market with a wound 3rd but I guess it wasn't loud enough because they're still out of production.

As the young lad already said, your best bet is to go out and get yourself a bunch of single strings and just substitute them when you change strings.

Yea, I've just started changing up chord shapes and like the idea of having another wound string. It would totally change my sound for the better because of the extra meat. I like it now, but it's a little ringy to me.

What brand do you prefer? I have yet to fall in love with any. Thinking about trying the Elixir coated. But like others said, If you have strings you already like then getting some wound "G's" to put with them might be a good way.

Heat getting to you Jim?

It would help to know what brand and type of string you like.

Loyal to Ernie Ball. Have literally never broken a single string from them.

After posting my last topic, then reading this one, I wonder why Gibson stopped producing their Powerlines strings? Those were my favorites for drop tuning. They lasted for long periods. I was really bummed to find out they discontinued making them.

Nowadays with so many Djent players popping up, you'd think they'd get back into the game with them. They were phenomenal strings.

You can buy Ernie Ball strings singularly, too.

I make my own 11-48 sets with a wound 0.022...just what do I do with all those solid 0.016 strings?
