It may seem bizarre but I learned a few cool chicken pickin licks from this guy...you would not think a guitarist for Rob Zombie And Marilyn Manson would be good at this.. but he is.

John5 is actually a country player by training. He just happened to get a gig with Manson and Zombie because he IS very good. He also has played with Skynyrd on the God and Guns album. ( there was a great interview someplace where the guys described their first encounter with him- strait from a function with Marilyn Manson- they didn't know WHAT to think!)

He also used to be in kd lang's band...that's pretty country!

In my humble opinion, Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits always will be one of the best all time guitar players. He does a lot of chicken pickin on many of his songs. Lots of info on youtube on how he does it. Gives tutorials. Of course, don't forget about Chet Atkins, who played a lot like that.

It's really not as bad as you'd think. A fair amount of the picking is done with the pick and just augmented with your free fingertips. I remember the first guy I saw doing this was Jerry Reed of Smokie and the Bandit fame and it just blew me away. Of course it's come a long way since then and I'm constantly amazed at what some of the Nashville session guys are doing nowdays.

I love John 5's work outside of metal and hard rock. I got brought in on bass for a new project that kind of mixes early rock n' roll with a more psycho-billy aesthetic. The lead singer and guitar player is woodshedding all sorts of chicken pickin' stuff right now, and he normally comes from that Manson/Zombie style of music. I'm totally gonna share this with him. He should love it. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing it.

While Knopfler plays fingerstyle, and brilliantly so, I have never heard him chicken pickin. For one thing, it looks like he keeps his action too high for chicken pickin' to even be an option.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
