Been thinking about this for a while. I always think the best guitarists draw influence not only from other guitar players but from other musicians generally. Ritchie Blackmore cited sax players as frequently being better at playing original lead lines than guitarists and I've often found that listening to drummers gives me rhythmic ideas that you just don't get from most guitar players. And for slide guitar phrasing I listen to singers like Shirley Bassey or Janis Joplin.

So how about a thread where we give honorable mention to great musicians whose instrument isn't standard guitar or bass.

Kicking it off with the genius of Gene Krupa and Buddy rich ...

Stevie Wonder pulling off the most incredible piece of childrens television EVER ...

And one to annoy your drummer with, the then 12 year old Senri Kawaguchi ...

I would have to go with Ginger Baker...huge influence on rock and roll drummers and jazzers as well. I would have to also through in Roy Orbison, talk about pipes...but a fine song writer too!

Good choices there. Though of the two, I'd prefer to have a beer with Roy Orbison. I've seen the Ginger Baker documentary.

Don't usually agree with ya Frank, but you nailed that one! Ginger was, er, well lets call him a character and leave it at that. Roy always seemed so laid back for a guy with the talent he had. Yeah a beer with him would be interesting to say the least.

More musicians! Here's one I've posted before but it certainly bears repeated viewing, even if it stretches the "no guitar" rule a litte.

I never seem to tire of this.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman.

I've always had a thing for Hammond B3's.

And Jon Lord. The Hammond always astounds me, as an instrument that isn't touch sensitive it's capable of some truly incredible dynamics.

+1!

I forgot about Jon, thanks for the reminder.

Jon Lord certainly should be in this thread. With or without Purple his playing covered the whole range from incredibly subtle to downright vicious. I loved how he'd take a solo and work all kinds of jazz, blues, rock and classical influences into the space of a few bars. And he was one of those rare rock keyboard players where you hear a few notes and just know without a shadow of doubt who's playing.

Another "Hammondist" I enjoy is Jimmy Greenspoon, Three Dog Night's original keyboardist. His efforts really helped coalesce the band's instrumentation into an enduring, homogenous blend.

One keyboard player who I've always admired and who has written and performed some of rock's biggest hits and also wrote one of the heaviest of the early 70s keyboard dominated songs,is Rod Argent who got his start as the leader/songwriter of the Zombies with such huge hits as "Time of The Season","She's Not There" etc. but really gained fame for his keyboard work in his band Argent with the huge hit "Hold Your Head Up".

Itzhak Perlman is a musician who has both inspired and influenced me.Ever since I was a kid and saw him on the Ed Sullivan Show at the tender age of 15.Even though his legs were deformed and severely weakened by polio at a very early age,his fingers have created some of the most beautiful violin music ever heard. If you ever see a copy of his interpretations of Paganini's 24 Caprices, buy it,you will be amazed by his incredible virtuosity. He also has released a 2 CD set of Mozart's Violin Concertos that is just incredible, his playing of the Adagio of the Violin Concerto No.3 in G Maj. would bring tears to a statue and it's worth buying the set just to hear that piece.

BTW: Rod and Argent/The Zombies, does a 21st century version of "Time Of The Season" that is super heavy and his work on the keys in this version is just about his best keyboard work ever.Even though Rod will turn 70 next year, his keyboard playing hasn't dimmed any and as a matter of fact, his playing is better than ever.Back in April he and his band played as part of the Moody Blues Cruise which was a 6 day Caribbean cruise with Argent, the Moodies and several other iconic bands from the 60s and 70s.

I catch myself at time during a gig just watching our drummer and really getting in to it. Aside from that Jon lord was always an inspiration to me since I started my musical career playing keyboard at a very young age.
