During Jimi's career he played a plethora of guitars that weren't ever seen on stage but were either used in the studio or just kept around his house for noodling on. Among these were a '68 Gibson 335,'65 Jazz Bass,2-'67 Hagstrom 8 string basses, '66 Guild SF-V Starfire, '67 Gretsch Corvette, '67 Jaguar, ''67 Epi Cortez, '67 Vox Mk. VI (teardrop), '68 Jazzmaster, '68 Martin D-45, '68 Fender Mustang, '68 Gibson J-200, '68 Black Widow, '68 SG Custom, '69 Rickenbacker 330 or 360, '70 Flying V, '68 Goya, '69 Flying V, Epi Casino, Epi FT-79, Washburn, Gibson J-160, various Strats, including a lefty.

BTW: Surprisingly enough, his favourite of all his guitars was his Epi FT-79 (Texan) this was the guitar that Jimi used on Brooke St. when he and Kathy Etchingham lived in London from 1967-70 and it was the guitar that Jimi used to write most of the songs from this period His most brilliant use of the Epi was when he was working out the guitar parts for his cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower"..He gave it to Maddy Bell's boyfriend Alan Parker in 1970 and Allan,a musician, played it on David Bowie's "Diamond Dogs" and songs by Dusty Springfield,Paul McCartney,The Walker Bros. and various others. It was auctioned off for $77,000 in 2001.

BTW cont'd: Some of the guitars listed were more than one in number such as the Strats-of course-but he had duplicates of other models too.

that was right after Epiphone was 'acquired' by Gibson, but before they moved operations out of the US. Epiphone instruments made between 1957 and 1969 were made in the Gibson factory. If you ever get to play a vintage Epiphone, you'll see why Jimi liked them. You can still get a good quality new Epiphone if you like Casinos.

Why is this noteworthy or strike anyone as odd..??

As guitar players, don't we all want to experience/experiment with as many guitars as we can..??

I know I do !

In less than 3 yrs. I've acquired 9 different guitars, 4 different Types, play them all regularly (at least weekly).

I have a Rickenbacker 360 and a Les Paul Standard in my sights, but for the purposes of domestic tranquiliy, currently I am holding right now at CONDITION D -1 !

I'll know when the timing's right to add these to the mix.

But, if I were Jimi, with his Talent, I'd have owned 1,000 guitars ! 8)

cheers!

+1 Lightnin, anyone who sticks exclusively to one brand or model is seriously cheating themselves. Different guitars will make you play differently. I've worked with players who have eight or ten Strats. Makes me chuckle at the sonic redundancy. I like my Strat, but I like my Gibson, Supro and the rest of my guitars too. They're all tools.

+1, although 50s and 60s strats seem mutually exclusive. The difference in neck shapes, fingerboards, pickup voicings, body cuts, etc make them very different instruments. It's understandable why a single strat doesn't cut it for the enthusiast or player (though ofcourse having just one is possible in theory  ). There are many guitars to be enjoyed in a lifetime.

Yes that is so true. Granted the Strats having 3 pups are more versatile, other models and brands as well have their own unique feel and sound. I think someone like Hendrix would sound like himself regardless of what he played. Actually I just wathced a vid of Hendrix playing a Gibson SG custom that uses 3 humbuckers. Just like people have different preferences even down to the type of body wood used. Many claim basswood sucks but then you have some of the best players in the world such as EVH and Guthrie Govan that swear by basswood as having a more balanced tone. But they still sound great playing non basswood guitars as well.

A fine example is a cigar box guitar. It will change your whole way of playing. They sound great and with some thought and some half decent parts are extremely giggable. Doesn't get any more down and dirty than that and it tosses the whole, brand/model snobbery right out the window. I've built some pretty cool electrics for around $75, but you can go simple for less than $20 if you use a piezo pickup. Really expensive guitars don't impress me. Last time I was at the Martin Factory, they had a D45S Authentic 1936 with a list price of $59,999 and I hated the way it played. The neck and action was horrible. The neck was like a baseball bat. It was really pretty with lots of nice appointments, but I just couldn't bond with it. Lucky in a way. here's a snapshot of it. They were unveiling the Authentic line and I a member of the Martin Owners Club, so I was emailed the invite.

Here's a photo of one of the Cigar Box Guitars I made and I built the little hybrid suitcase tube amp too. It's the oldest vintage guitar I own. The box is 1910. I wish Hendrix played one.
