Since I left LA I have been focusing more on guitar building and my other business and not really doing the band thing anymore. A couple of locals I have jammed with before keep texting me to form a band with them since experienced serious pro players are really hard to find around here. Typically I weasel out of it because to be honest it was usually covers and usually lame. I tend to only get serious with original bands. But to my surprised one of them just sent a song they want to cover and it is actually not lame and will at least be a challenge... Granted it is not the much heavier stuff I am used to, good is good and tasty is tasty.

Are you sure that's not the Mahavishnu Orchestra after drinking some moon shine? Jean Luc Ponty would like that one. Very tasty. Good luck with it.

Thanks. I messed around with it a little on guitar today and I got the timing on the main riff down but the jazzier parts are going to take some focus. And then of course if the drummer can't cut it all bets are off  The guy that wants to do this told me this is a new drummer I have not met yet and doing this song was his idea so that could be a good sign. If I am going to put any time into a cover band it needs to be a challenge and something I enjoy playing and won't get bored with. There is no money around here at all for live bands so if it is not fun it is not worth it and of course it has to sound good and be tight or by default I will stop showing up lol.

Challenges are good. We just finished working out John Mayer's "No Such Thing." I don't think there was a single chord in that song that I'd ever played before.

That's the way I like it. I made a pact with myself as a young kid when after realizing how hard it is to get good, but also wanted to believe I had potential was that every single time I pick up the guitar, I can not put it down until I learn something new. Many years later I am still keeping that pact. I remember learning basic 12 bar blues and pentatonic scale leads that after I exhausted the Mel Bay book I started looking at the entire neck instead of a "box" and would not put down the guitar until I expanded from the box and it had to sound good too.

Funny thing. I think this guy is confused. I just got a text and now he is saying he is sick of covers and it never goes anywhere so now he wants to us work with another drummer (this guy is a pro and a producer) on originals. He can't seem to make up his mind. I am wondering if he was having so much trouble getting that Derek Trucks song down that it discouraged him. He had told me earlier he was having trouble figuring it out by ear so I suggested he check online for tabs. He told me it would not matter as he is using some kind of alternate slide tuning and just kind of freaking him out. He is actually a very good guitarist but I think he is limited in what he can do and wants to have it easier. I can't convince him that it takes serious work and dedication. The last I had spoke to him before this whole ordeal I told him if he wants this to go anywhere, we need to do less jamming and pick a tough cover and work on that until it was tight since we need the discipline if anything and seems like he already gave up. Oh well. At least I learned some of that song...very cool riffs in it.

Okay so I get a text from the guy today asking if I want to jam with the first drummer tonight. Now I know he gave up on the Trucks song but figure what the hey let me see if this drummer has potential.

Short answer...no. He is not the worst and has some imagination in his playing but is pretty much beginner level. Very nice kid though and I would not mind jamming with him for fun and help him get better.

Then to top it off I am getting all these crazy texts from his original drummer that I have jammed with a few times (older guy with decent chops but not a real pro) that he wants to start a band behind this other guys back with me and is dissing the heck out of him.

I think I need to tell them all this is not working out at the last thing I need is getting in the middle of these guys drama when none of them are really professional in any way yet. I do not understand that they can't face this is not the freaking Rolling Stones but let's just have fun and play tight in a drama-free environment.
