I got some valuable help from Miami Mike on this, but I'm throwing the question out to the Forum. Sourcing catalogs or other sources to obtain quality backing tracks for performance purposes..i.e. really good 'band minus lead guitar' stuff for downloading into a computer to be linked into a sound system.

The one that I have found is Guitar Backing Track. It is all in alphabetical order, according to artist. Hint: Letter "J" also has a huge menu called "Jam Tracks" that people have uploaded themselves. It's a mish mash of everything, all styles, all genres.

youtube has a ton.

Coffeebreak Groves and Random Jammer have some really nice tracks and they are free.

Coffeebreak has a web site where you can buy some too. But there are plenty of free ones on Youtube.

These are all appreciated. Does anyone know of any commercial sources which produce tracks of the same quality and instrumentation as one finds with Karaoke but without the lead guitar?

The ones on iTunes are like that. They may offer 2-3 versions of a song. Some without all guitars, some without lead, some with out electric, acoustic or slide. Not a lot of artists, but 31 volumes. The are under album names of Backing Tracks For Guitarists, under the artist name of Backing Tracks For Guitarists. Artists such as T Rex, Stones, Pink Floyd, Eagles, Killers, Bowie, Queen, Beatles, Katy Perry, and a few others.

If you search "Backing Tracks" you get a miss mash of stuff that is more karaoke oriented, to without drums, to jam along style stuff. You have to sort through it, but some decent stuff there - happy hunting.
