I'm with Arjay.
I saw him in 1998 and I was so stoked when I got such great seats that I could see the perspiration on his brow. After seeing that show I don't think I have ever purposely listened to another Clapton tune ever since. I mean by choice, that is. I'm not saying I haven't heard him on the radio or on other people's stereos. He just sucked, pure and simple. There's no other way to say it. Bonnie Raitt opened for him and she just about brought the roof down so it wasn't that the crowd wasn't pumped. He just gave it nothing and in doing so he lost a fan, namely me. I've heard people say I should give the guy a break cuz everyone has bad hair days. I say tell that to the 25,000 fans who ponied up serious cash.

Glad that I have seen him so many times since 1970 on. Not once did I leave one of his concerts and been disappointed, every show was a great one.

Since he has been touring since 1964, I am thinking the man has earned a break from it. I did some touring (one nighters) in the late 70's and it was fun at times, but the different hotel (and certainly not as nice as the ones EC is getting) each night kind of sucked. Hard to get good sleep, so it does wear on you. Can't imagine what it is like to have to fly to each gig, hotel, sound check, gig, then do it all over again for months on end!

Hope EC enjoys the break. He has younger kids and wife and my guess he would like to spend more time with them, and he has had enough crap (some of it by his own doing) in his life and certainly deserves a break.

I never got to see him live but my dad has many times I guess from back in the day until recently and told me every show was spectacular and he wished I was at each one with him. But I also know people can have a bad gig or bad sound or something just turned them off and it makes for a lackluster show. I know that sucks for the fans who paid good money but he is afterall only human. Oh I know some say he is God but that he is not. There are a few bands where I have been to many shows and certainly notice some are so amazing it approaches perfection, and others were simply horrible for one reason or the other. Stuff happens.

I only saw Mr. Clapton perform live once, in March of 1968. It was an epiphany for me as a student of the electric guitar and I'll never forget it. His playing was flawless as was that of his two bandmates and when that band ultimately dissolved my friends and I were dumbstruck. But Eric returned with a new lineup and yet more fine collaborative compositions with new ally Stevie Winwood. Sadly that alliance was also transient as EC struck out on his own. He managed to put the Fender Stratocaster back on the map but his solo efforts really never produced the kind of inspiring music as when he was teamed with equally-gifted protégés. That would be rectified with what I consider to be Clapton's opus magnus, namely his symbiotic relationship with Duane Allman. But beyond the D&TD album, "slowhand" hasn't really done anything that I'd consider remarkable.

Yeah come to think of it my dad said he saw a gig long ago when Clapton was with Winwood and Baker in Blind Faith and he expected to be blown away because he loved all the artists other groups. He told me that was a big disappointment. His reasoning was that he did not like the songs but my theory is he was expecting it to be more like Clapton style with him wailing blues and Stevie singing over it but ended up being something more generic/subdued/trippy for lack of better terms.

There's no doubt that the dynamics of Blind Faith were significantly different than that of Cream -- I think many were expecting that since Ginger Baker was a member of both ensembles that the new band would generate the same high-intensity drive. However, I believe Steve Winwood was the primary driver of that bus and many of their songs seemed very "Traffic-esque". I enjoyed the change of pace and appreciated it for what it was to the extent that I bought the band's single album five times -- vinyl LP (twice), 8-trk (remember those?), cassette, and finally CD.

They made a quid or two off of me, I reckon.

+1 !!

It's one of my Clapton Favs... though it was at a time when the Coke Monkey was firmly attached to his vertebrae !

Possibly why Stevie had such a heavy hand in it all !

cheers!

I only saw Clapton once, but I was lucky enough that it was one of the tour dates for the ARMS benefit concerts in 1983. It was Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page -- each playing their own set with star musicians supporting each of them. Then -- of course -- the obligatory jam with all three at the end. Joe Cocker singing "You Are So Beautiful" with Clapton playing lead was really a special moment.

I've never been a big fan, but he certainly doesn't annoy me with his playing the way some of the other "guitar gods" do. He's been at it a long time. I think he's earned a nice retirement. Hope he enjoys it.

You really need to give a listen to the Live Album "EC Was Here" Recorded in Santa Monica at the end of his 1974 tour, if those cranked electric blues don't make you sit up and take notice of Slowhands abilities, nothing will. That album I have bought five times...album, 8 track (yeah I remember those), cassette, and two different versions of CD!

It isn't his abilities, which I've already stipulated as to be quite considerable.

It's his choice of such B......O......R......I......N......G material that I find so narcoleptically dull. There was time when he was quite the innovator. But alas, that era has long since passed.

:(

In an interview published on Uncut Eric confirmed his retirement plans attributing his decision to the road being “unbearable” in addition to “odd ailments” that may force him to hang up his guitar permanently.

One of those "ailments" concerns his health problems.

The 69-years old bluesrocker cancelled two shows in 2013 due to back pain. He was scheduled to be one of the performers at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 25th anniversary concert in Madison Square Garden on 30 October 2009, but cancelled due to gallstone surgery.

Well, here's a photo of him at Silverstone! :D

He was interviewed on the grid before the race by Martin Brundle (they're good mates). When Eric was asked what's going on in his life he said in a very jokey way that he's retired.
