Having grown up with half this band I cant help but say

ALL DOLLED UP....the story of the NEW YORK DOLLS !!!!!

EXCELLENT and it was the DOLLS who opened he door for bands like POISON<>TWISTED SISTER< etc.....THEY WERE THE FIRST !!!!

MY second favorite is 10 days on the road with KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD

He went on the road and went to all the old blues players and had them play and recorded them at there houses....it was so educational and great to see that FAME was NOT the reason these people played as more than half were still broke but still loved to play !!!!!

"DIG!" A terrific documentary about the linked fates of two modern rock bands: The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols. Great on many levels, you won't forget it.

Also, "Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould" is an amazing experience, and a glimpse into the kind crackpot genius it takes to become a one-man musical revolution.

Most musical biopics are lame-o rehashings of collected anecdotes that everybody already knows, string together in a "and then they did this, and then they wrote that" fashion. I like Oliver Stone, but "The Doors" has all the storytelling impact of "The Glenn Miller Story."

As for "I'm Not There," it's not a biopic, it's not supposed to tell Bob Dylan's life story, and it doesn't suck.

As for concert films, you can't beat the lovely shooting and the drop-dead gorgeous audio of "Concert For George."

I agree with so many of the suggestions that others have already given, such as Help!, This is Spinal Tap, Walk The Line, and Ray. I would add:

Almost Famous
A Mighty Wind
Mr. Holland's Opus
O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Admittedly, these are movies more about music than about any particular artist, but they are all extraordinary in their own way.

I don't think anyone's mentioned " A Hard Day's Night " with The Beatles. I've seen that movie at least 100 times and 45 years after it was made, it's still one of the wittiest and funny movies ( not just music movies) ever made. The Beatles are young, the fans are crazy, the music is..... it just IS !!!!

ps - and Paul's grandfather is very clean !!

I love "Amadeus," seen it 20 times or so... so I feel it's important to correct a popular misconception: it is NOT the life story of Mozart, and in fact does not even claim to be based in any factual information at all.

It's a work of fiction based on a popular music-school rumor that has long ago been debunked.

For the real story, check Maynard Solomon's book Mozart: A Life.
