I think a lot of us have heard stories of a "barn" find- a car that was hidden away for years, sometimes sitting for years with low mileage.

has anybody had experienced the same with a guitar or amp? not in a barn literally, but maybe an old guitar sitting under a bed, or an amp put away in a closet.

myself, I sold my first amp about 5 years ago. it was a brown Princeton circa 1963. I got a more powerful amp for gigging around '68, and the amp was put away. when I moved out years later, the amp sat in a closet until mom called me and said to come get it. I plugged it in once, and it still worked. it was in perfect condition ,and never had a tube change. sold it for about a grand to a harmonica player who loves it.

any stories?

In 1995 I bought my 1983 Strat from someone who had bought it brand new "to learn on" then realised it was more effort than he was prepared to put in. The guitar had sat with the original factory strings on, unplayed and under his bed for 12 years.

I got a 1969 Gibson SG recently by some guy who comes by the shop and drops off old instruments and parts that he thinks are garbage and sells what we want to use really cheap or wants us to sell it for him. I noticed the neck first and knew it was an old gibson and had to be worth something and he gave it to me. Then he says "take this body too I think it goes with it"....I thought the body was some kind of self made creation and did not even want it but he insisted. I figured I would use it as an ashtray or make some kind of wall art out of it.

Well I start doing research and find out it is indeed a genuine 1969 SG and needs a little routing and the neck set from a body repair that was never completed. Talk about a barn score. Granted it might take some investment in parts and work to restore it getting the neck and body for free should get me a very valuable guitar out of it for way way less then buying one since even in poor condition seem to be averaging $3500-$5500.

I also got another score once granted it was just a squire. The guy posted an ad in CL saying he is going off to school and the guitar is in parts...first one there gets it free. I was the first one there.

Another time I saw an auction on ebay for a 72 strat body and neck and the guy was actually using the body as an ashtray and it was rattle can painted a horrible flat black. I notice it said he was located in Los Angeles. So I wrote him and come to find out he lives around the corner from me. The opening started at $400 so I asked if he would pull the auction and I would be right over with cash. He went for it and I walked over with cash. Ends up the body was a rare one piece ash and beautiful once I got the ugly paint off it. I sold the body for $700 and got almost $500 for the neck and $150 for the neck plate. That was a score.

Bought my Guild from the kid who found it at a garage sale for $5. It was in a basement for years before being sold.

How are the repairs progressing on that Guild of yours?

Well, more delays, considering my hours got cut and I found this Dimarzio Strat Trem.

Sometimes you just gotta jump on stuff when it's available.

I know all about jumping on stuff this month, my wallet's taken a beating on music gear lately. Number one Strat's going in for a full stainless steel refret soon though, I'm nervous as hell in case it comes back playing really different.

I just dropped a half a grand on ebay for a strat just because I needed the neck. Now I did get a good deal and this guitar might be a authentic early MIJ 68 reissue that goes for $1700 ish but yeah I am absolutely spending more then I am taking in as projects keep lining up endlessly and I keep buying and not selling.

How about a 9.5 Princeton Reverb from November of 1965 for $625?

Or a 9.0 Fender pre-CBS Pro Amp from December of 1964 for seven hundred bucks?

Or an 8.5 (restorable) Vibrolux Reverb from 1966 for $1750.

Or a 9.5/10.0 drip-edge Deluxe Reverb from January of 1968 for $1350?

Or a 9.5 pre-CBS Vibroverb from February of 1964 for twenty-one hundred bucks?

Most of my stash consists of "barn finds" to one degree or another.

Arjay

My barn find is my Univox 1010 system (u1011 head and u2080 cabinets) that I have in another thread.

The shop rag is there to make it look authentic. :)
I caught the sun in the headlight. I was feeling very artsy fartsy.
