Another one for me is Tool. I was in a band in the 90s when Undertow came out. The drummer wanted us to play "Prison Sex" so I agreed but was not thrilled about covering this band. I borrowed the CD to learn my parts and when I got into the structure of the song I got into them. They just had something different going on. When Anema came out I bought it and was hooked for life. Now they're one of my favorites.

I saw Tool with Soundgarden back in 1993 in Seattle. I was huge into Soundgarden but only luke warm on Tool. At the show, Soundgarden bored me to tears ... with Chris Cornell seeming to put more energy into his lifeless rhythm guitar playing instead of his singing, while Tool hit the stage and burned the place down. I left with totally different opinions of those bands.

The Sex Pistols, but then I heard Never Mind the Bollox at a party and was blown away. I went out the next day and bought it.

The Smashing Pumpkins, same story as with the Pistols. I heard Siamese Dream from beginning to end and became a fan. Their albums from the '90s (the real Smashing Pumpkins) are some real gems of modern psychedelia.
