Two come to mind right off the bat for me

Phish - got gagged and dragged to a concert in 1996 and it was one of the best shows I'd been to. Small venue and they rocked the joint. To me I was witnessing the direction "classic rock" went in without anyone noticing. That B3 organ, the guitar. Just plain tore it up. Thought I'd hate it.

Tesla 'Forever More' - not a huge fan of these guys but I always liked Frank Hannon's Tone and style. Someone gave this CD to me and I chuckled a bit thinking "they're still at it?". I actually love this album. There's not one song I skip on my commute home which in this day and age says something. And I love the guitar sound they got. And yup. Still love Frank Hannon.

I always disliked Prince's music immensely. I always gave him credit for being a very talented musician, but never a fan whatsoever. When I started dating my now wife in the late 1990's, she made me go see him (and every opportunity thereafter, too) as she is a HUGE fan . It was a relatively small venue (2000 people or so) and general admission with an open floor (yuck!). But we got seats (by the grace of God) right by the side of the stage. I could not have been more wrong about him. He was AMAZING, and his entire band. He hit that stage like an R&B steamroller. To this day, I never listen to his recorded music, but I will see him live any time. The dude is ridiculously talented and puts on an amazing show (fabulous guitar player, too).

One band I didn't think I'd like is "Here Come the Mummies", my friends kept after me and I finally went and saw them... now I've seen them in three states and quite a few times.

They're not what I'd call a guitar band, but holy cow are they fun to watch.

Never thought I'd like John Mayer.
I just figured he was one of those "nicey-nice" commercial products.
Saw a performance,... that boy's got talent!

I'm more of a prog/psych/space enthusiast,
but i do respect talent of all types.

Neutral Milk Hotel's album In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. Very odd and quirky but some truly beautiful songwriting and clever lyrics.

I'd add Prince to that list.

Sade.
Lady Armadillo always loved her, and I could tolerate her music (tolerated it even better when I found it made Lady Armadillo very, um..."relaxed.") Went to see her in concert, and found out that SADE ROCKS! Crack band, lots of guitar, puts more soul into her music live than on disc/vinyl, gorgeous to boot.

Impressed with John Mayer live--still don't like his recorded output that much, but thought his live show was pretty dang good.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
He was opening up for Joe Walsh (who I was actually going to see), and I was not enthusiastic, because outside of "Blue On Black" and "Aberdeen", I thought of him as solely an SRV ripoff artist...but I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, there was a lot of SRV influence, but he actually kept my interest and showed me some things I didn't expect. I would go see him again.

Haha.ya,he is definatley unique.one thing about prince though,he has always seemed to be well respected by musicians from all walks of life....I guess I'm just suprised Mayer has his own signature strat and all.not saying anything negative...he just kinda seems like a Justin beiber kinda musician to me..I guess that is a little negative..

Haha, I wouldn't class him as a Justin Bieber musician really.

He reminds me more of Miley Cyrus.

I'm not a fan of Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Like Jeff Beck and Joe Bonamassa, it seems too much about impressive fretwork, and not about eliciting feelings. A good guitarist is one who knows the techniques but knows when not to use them.

That said, here's something that's completely different, but which impressed me. Best listened to with something with more range than a laptop:

yeah Prince is one for me too

He played a surprise show at a small venue in NYC about 10 years ago. The line was around 4 square blocks. We got as far as just past the box office but that was it. You could not move from that spot nor see around the corner to the stage. I wanted really bad to see the show but we just couldn’t move.

I agree… he’s awesome

A bandmate gave me the Johnny Lang CD with the intent that we were going to mine the disc and learn a few of his songs. I was sure I wouldn't like him and the little punk did not disappoint. I told the rest of the guys if they wanted to do any of his material that they'd be doing it three-piece.

We never did get around to putting any of his songs together.

Back in the early 90s I was really reluctant to give the RHCP a listen when my girlfriend was going on and on about how cool they were. I figured any band that got tons of pop radio airplay and had a name like that must be shyte. I admit, learning to like them was a slow process but it did eventually happen.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
