I'm looking to buy a used stratocaster (see ad below). My concerns are whether it is authentic and if so is it Japanese or American? According to the serial, it could be a 1993-4 Japanese or a 1996-7 American, but I think it's weird that the serial is on the front of the headstock. The owner said the previous owner had the neck sanded down and so the decals had been rubbed off. Does that sound legit?

Nothing "US" about that guitar. Burled-maple veneer top over a (likely) basswood body. The "raw" truss-rod access hole belies any possibility of American origin.

Decals are cheap. And plentiful.

And so are genuine Fender Strats.

Pass this one by.

It's such a bad fake it would be laughable were the seller not attempting to pass it off as genuine.

As the others have said, that is not an authentic Fender.

To answer your first question, it is most likely neither. Probably made in China or perhaps some other Asian country.

What's really sad is that some 13 year old would spend his hard earned lawn mowing money on a guitar like that for his first guitar, thinking he was getting a Fender.

+1000

Heartbreaking for sure. That's why it's incumbent upon us to help authenticate a guitar (of any brand) when someone comes here asking for help.

Sadly, more often than not, they come to us too late in the process.

Whatever it is that headstock decal does not belong. The truss rod hole is similar to some squire/starcasters I have seen (and those go for like 100 bucks new with a gig bag and mini amp) but the finish and hardware I have not. Probably a China copy not worth $225 at all.

You don't even need to look that closely. It's sunburst on the front and black on the back. That's not a Fender anything.

If you look carefully at the "Contour Body" decal on the headstock, you'll see that it has been stuck carelessly on to the headstock, as if it were a sticker. A genuine Fender wouldn't generally have an imperfection of that sort. OP, do not buy this one. I repeat; do not buy this one. It's definitely a fake!

Actually even the authentic decals look just like that if not polyed or lacquered over very heavily. But you can tell by the way it was put on it is not right. On the old old fenders you could see the edges like that but that is certainly not an old old fender or CS. The bigger givaway is Fender would have tried a little harder to have the angle of the decal so the lettering is closer to the angle of the Fender Stratocaster decal. Although many are skewed as well I have not seen one that off before. That one was done horribly and absolutely not by Fender. But there are so many other tell tales of a cheap fake it is not even worth scrutinizing any one particular detail lol.
