Did Leo ever comment about the Squier line of guitars and basses?

Leo Fender was busy with his own company G&L at the time of his death, it wouldn't have been right for him to comment on his old company's products at the time.

He probably thought hey, another guitar that I didn't design with my name on the headstock.

I wonder if he got royalties for any line that had the Fender name on it. If so, I am sure he had no complaints. Or did they buy the rights to his name outright? I have no idea.

No royalties, and all of his patents that were issued prior to 4 January 1965 transferred to CBS/FMI ownership. Two patents issued to Leo Fender subsequently for Fender-related products were the micro-tilt neck and the bullet truss-rod adjustment, which Leo developed at the behest of FMI in the late '60s. AFAIK, he retained ownership of the patents and licensed their use exclusively to FMI.

The patents are one thing but a name is another which is certainly trademarked and copyright protected. Do you know for a fact he did not have a royalty deal on his trademarked name? If not he must have gotten a pretty penny to give up all rights to his own name/logo. Afterall think of all the sales made just because a Squire for example has the Fender name/logo on it so people think it is as good as a Strat costing over 10x as much.

He got about fifteen million bucks.

"Pretty" enough, I reckon.

Yeah I guess he was able to stretch that for a while. Granted I think it was worth more but at the time perhaps that was considered a fair amount.

In 1965, $15,000,000 was sufficient to buy any five countries of Central America.

Ah okay I was not aware he was totally bought out in 1965. Yes back then 15 million was like 15 billion now. I was under the idea he still hung around for a while. Was he flipping out when they starting messing with the manufacturing methods or was he so bloody loaded with cash it didn't matter to him anymore? I understand he was big on keeping costs down but was also a stickler. Guess I need to do more research. I recall reading somewhere that the reason the Strats started to get brighter sounding in the 70s was Leo was losing his hearing in the upper frequencies which is normal. So he still had input after 65 or is that a false rumor?

My understanding is he sold the company because he thought he was going to die.

He then got better (thankful!), and went on to Music Man and G&L.

Interesting. Well he gave us the P-bass and Strat (not to mention the others) which is quite an accomplishment. For giggles I did a wiki on Leo knowing that it is not always 100% accurate and was totally unaware he also gave us the Musicman Stingray bass. I had an older one and it was such a pleasure to play and so well balanced.

And what a great story of success that he started the Fender company with a $600 loan.

Wiki states "As part of this deal, Leo Fender signed a non-compete clause and remained a consultant with Fender for a while"... That explains the rumors with the 70s Strats. He sold the company in 65 but was still there making decisions afterwards. However and this is only speculation...I wonder if he would have been so quick to sign a non compete if he did not think he was dying.
