I have recently purchased from my local music shop a gold Eric Johnson Fender Stratocaster with a Rosewood neck. The problem is that I noticed that mine has the tremolo spring cover on the back and does not have a nitro finish. Apart from these things the guitar is awesome in sound and playability (I have had over 12 USA Strats in my time including another maple neck EJ, so I know a good sounding Strat.) it also came with the correct tags, pickups, neck plate, case etc.

Is it possible to check the serial no with Fender to make sure the guitar is genuine, or does anybody know if fender made some this way.

Hi Aviator, welcome to the Forum.

You can contact Rob Schwarz at consumerrelations@fender.com . Tell him your guitar's serial number and he'll verify it for you - or not.

The trem cavity cover and non-nitro finish would definitely be wrong for the maple neck EJ Strat, and I think for the rosewood one as well. I believe my friend's maple neck EJ came with a cavity cover you could opt to have fitted if wanted, so I just guess it's just possible the shop decided to do that off their own bat - or perhaps for a previous customer who then didn't purchase the guitar.

But if your EJ has a polyurethane finish then something ain't right, to the best of my knowledge.

Cheers - C

Thanks I'll send them an email. It really seems like an EJ neck, bound edges, no string tree, nice piece of wood quarter sawn. If its a fake them somebody has gone to a lot of trouble to produce a guitar of this hight quality. It sounds better than my maple neck EJ.

The EJ Rosewood (laminated RW) didn't come w/ a Trem Cover for the back.

It is a Nitro finish and it didn't come in Gold, though it did come in 'Palomino Metallic' which might be called a dark gold, maybe light Copper, I guess.

Either you have the color & finish wrong (in which case it's a legit EJ)... or you have an EJ neck on a something else Body.

Not to bust your chops, but why would one buy a premium priced Artist guitar w/o authenticating it first ?

cheers!

Not really. On the EJ the serial number is on the neck plate and you can buy those on ebay and screw it onto any guitar. If it really is poly then it is probably not an EJ body since they were all nitro (granted even the Custom Shops and the EJ are still a poly sealer) it should have a "thin skin" nitro "finish" on top of that. As well the neck if it is legit that should be nitro which you should be able to easily tell comparing it to any standard strat.

If you lift the pickguard it should have routes like this..

Also the electronics/pickups should look like this...

If either of those two look good then you might just be mistaking the finish and it is nitro. If the body route or the electronics do not look just like those pics then you may have been hoodwinked.

As far as the color it looks "gold" ish but is actually called palomino metallic and should look like this...

Anybody who knows anything about horse flesh will immediately tell you that it's the stupidest fooking descriptive phrase for a color that marketing guys have ever dreamed up. If that paint bears any relationship to the equine species at all, it would be called "buckskin metallic".

Hi again Aviator. Couple of further questions. How are you testing the finish to tell whether it's nitro or polyurethane? I only ask because I can't think of another Strat in Palomino in the catalog at present (though there may be one), so I'm not sure what else this body could be.

Also, did you buy the guitar from the shop as new, or second-hand? If it's pre-owned, then there are several possibilities. Maybe the previous owner fitted the optional trem spring cover - some people prefer the cover on the back. Or alternatively, perhaps somebody bought an Eric Johnson neck on Ebay and fitted it to a body from a different Strat.

I wonder what the shop told you they were selling you?

Cheers - C

Good questions, both.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
