Remember the classic tune "Ace of Spades" from Motorhead? Check out Eddie Clarke jamming on a Strat (with all the amps probably dimed on "10"). Good God... How did Phil Taylor (drums) and Eddie Clarke (guitar) keep up with Lemmy on bass?

I guess this was the birth of "speed metal"!

The classic Lemmy, Phil and Eddie lineup of Motorhead! They were the first band I ever saw play live, October 1980 at Manchester Apollo on the Ace Up Your Sleeve tour.

They were so loud I couldn't tell which song they were playing but damn, I had a good time. My ears were ringing for a week after.

I probably still have this on a picture disc somewhere ...

I used to hang out with Lemmy at the Rainbow bar and grill in Hollywood. I think he lived there pretty much. I understand he had some health problems this year but he must be okay because I hear they are back on stage promoting a new album.

They were so loud because of the Martial amps.

Saw Lemmy way before he became Lemmy
He was in a band called Rev Black and the rocking Vickers (yes, misspelt like that), they played the Manchester clubs regularly , here he is on the right

Can't blame the amps..it is the user of the amp. However in larger venues how loud it is depends on the PA system and who is at the helm. You could play though a freaking battery powered pignose and if mic'ed through a 100,000 watt PA system and turned to "11" would make anyone deaf. I guess you could blast Marshall amps in a small venue but how would you hear the drums, bass and vocals if the PA system could not keep up?

Ace of Spades is iconic. But there are more reasons why Lemmy is a rock god:

That whole vibe and sound reminds me a lot of the rocky horror picture show, or a cross between the Rocky horror picture show and Spinal tap. And I can;t really make out the chorus....he is saying "I've got a sewing machine"?

EDIT: nevermind I see the song is called "Silver Machine". I suck really bad at transcribing lyrics.

My Mum god rest her soul was always getting lyrics of pop songs wrong, she asked me once why Herman's Hermits were singing "She's a muscular Boy" and laughed out loud when I explained they were actually singing "She's a must to avoid"

Yep that is the same way I hear lyrics. Granted I can usually tell or at least question something is wrong because it makes no sense or is way silly and I need someone to tell me what they are really saying I guess it is just the way people are wired. It is amazing I can usually tell what brand guitar or bass just by hearing it, the key of the song...heck I can even change strings without a tuner and come dead on or pretty close. But when it comes to lyrics I just can not tell what the heck they are saying half the time.

I was definitely questioning that a tough guy B/A rocker like Lemmy would be saying "I've got a sewing machine" That would have to be one heck of a metaphor if that were the case.

Well, it was a song that Hawkwind had made before Lemmy (then Ian) joined. He joined as a guitar player, but right as he joined, the bass player left the group, and left his Rickenbacker bass too. And while they might have wanted both rhythm and lead guitar, having bass was more important than having two guitars.
Lemmy had never touched a bass before, and had to learn on stage. He didn't know how he was supposed to play it, so he improvised with fast picking and stops like on a regular guitar.
I think he did pretty darn well. It sure doesn't look like someone who's only played bass for a couple of weeks.

Back to lyrics, did you know that Lemmy wrote the lyrics to Ozzy's "Mama, I'm coming home"? And wrote Ramones' R.A.M.O.N.E.S.?

He has an ugly personality (German nazi symbols on stage, and WWE is not my kind of thing), but I have to give him credit - he's got chops, and heavy metal in particular would have been different if it weren't for Lemmy Kilmister.

Anyhow, here's another good one:

Well he is Motorhead and a very influential band. The several times I met him at the Rainbow in LA he is a bit intimidating appearance wise but really is just a partying rocker and pretty down to earth. I am not sure if he is into nazism or anything like that other then image and gimmicks and shock value. He is far from the first rocker to do that.

According to an interview I read regarding his nazi stuff collection what he said and I quote ""I only collect the stuff. I didn't collect the ideas."
