Can anyone tell me how a Stratocaster was named? Could it be a slight combination of stratosphere and Stradivarius= Stratocaster? :?:

"The name “Stratocaster” came from Fender’s business partner, Don Randall. It was intended to be reminiscent of aircraft technology, and reflect forward thinking and modern design.

Mr. Arjay gets credit in the other thread on the same subject:

The words "strato" and "sonic" were both buzz-words reflecting the cutting-edge advantage in the post-WWII aerospace industry that the US enjoyed pretty much exclusively at the time of the Stratocaster's development. It's not surprising that Leo chose that name for his latest guitar creation and would later adopt the term "sonic" as well for many other guitar and amp designs.

As for the Stratojet/Stratofortress debate, I'll take the B-47 any day......one of the most graceful aircraft ever developed.

It's either a wheel underneath a heavy amp or it's a type of oil. :P

Actually, that part of the name was following the tradition of the original "Broadcaster," which became the "Telecaster," this the next instrument was the "Stratocaster."

Interesting. I think the story of the "Nocaster" is better though. I read that they used to just clip the "broadcaster" off the decals so it just said Fender and eventually trademarked the name nocaster so they could sell replicas.

Yup, "broadcast" and "telecast" (think TV) played a big role in the name.

The oil is "castor".
A caster is also someone who casts (hurls) something, which is what's relevant here.
A broadcaster was originally someone spreading seeds over multiple furrows. In radio, it was initially used for sending transmissions over multiple frequencies/bands.
Leo Fender repaired radios for a living, so he borrowed the "Broadcaster" name from that.

Telecaster means "throw afar".
Stratocaster means "blanket tosser". No, really. Stratum means flat layer or bedspread or horse blanket.
Leo likely thought of the Stratofortress, which was named so because it were to fly in the stratosphere - a layer.

Some guitarists took the casting part to heart. Pete Townshend comes to mind. :D
