Cool vids but kind of off topic regarding which popular electric guitar is most iconic.

Arth, are you aware that we used to get The Young Ones on our MTV here. I LOVED that show!!

That reminds me, I've got to get a DVD collection of that show. Freaking hilarious.

That, I can buy. (Not the bass guitar, though - I'm not that filthy rich.)

Stands out more than Bo Diddley's cigar box, Prince's tentacle dildo. Paul Stanley's Axe axe, or Billy Gibbons' white hairy atrocity?

If not limiting it to electrics, I think "This Machine Kills Fascists" wins, hands down. Even Willie Nelson's "Trigger" can't touch that for being memorable. But for electrics? Hard to say, but I would put EVH far down that list because he didn't get much visual exposure outside the US. I'd probably rate it alongside Noel Gallagher's Union Jack guitar, which I think is more well-known in Europe, or Zakk Wylde's target, which is probably more known among the younger audience.

So I'll go for Macca's Hofner. Easier to agree on, I think. :)

You know we will all have to agree to disagree. What you are mentioning means nothing to me...I love Oasis but have no clue what they played. As far a Zakk Wyldes target I can not imagine that being even 1/100th as well known world wide as the EVH Frankenstrat. But I will leave this here as my good friend and bass teacher who recently passed away is in a vid with Zakk and I think the musicianship of my friends band as well as Zakk is worth noting (as well as regardless of what he is seen playing on videos, 99% of his recordings were done with a 64 or 65 Fender Jazz bass).

And that wouldn't surprise me one bit. If someone were to ask me to bet on EVH's guitar being more recognizable than the McCartney's Hoff, I wouldn't touch it.

Kind of crazy isn't it? That the most iconic guitar could very well be a Bass.

There's still an itch I have about that concerning the term "Iconic" as described in the OP. And I'll give an example here.

If I painted Paul's Hofner like Eddie's Frankenstein, what would be recognized more? Would it be the shape, or the color? Does Paul's Hof then become a Van Halen guitar?

That's a very interesting question isn't it?

Well we can also debate the definition of "iconic" but to simplify...when you see the Eiffel tower....you think of Paris France. When you see the Empire State building, you think of NYC etc.

So if we are discussing what is the most iconic electric guitar, I would assume that means when you see the guitar you recognize it and relate it to something or someone well known and popular.

Now is there a particular popular electric guitar that when most "average" people see it automatically relate it to a specific well known person, place or thing? Seems there may be several. So how do we determine which one is the most popular world wide? I have no idea.

I think it would take a world wide poll asking average people from all different age groups. Of course if you ask musicians you are asking a bunch of biased arrogant know it alls who think they are gods gift to the musical world and have no way of being objective with anything regarding a topic this subjective unless we had actual scientific data...and even then we would still argue and try to find reasons the polls were flawed

There are no wrong answers here (it's an opinion thread).

But actually, such rankings all run into trouble whenever you use adjectives like 'Best', 'Most', 'Greatest', etc.

Everyone brings their own experiences and prejudices in answering.

Truth is, all the guitars mentioned are Iconic in their own way. Each has been played by Star-status musicians and each has contributed greatly to one or more genre.

There are also others which were not mentioned but also deserve to be in the mix, such as the Rickenbacker 360, Melody Maker, L-5, Firebird, Flying V and others.

You took the words right out of my mouth!
I'm just happy to say that I own several of them and love each for what it is.

cheers!

True. But the post is asking which is "most" iconic. The world may never know. Come to think of it whenever I see a Rick I think of Paul McCartney. But would the average person? However if the post were instead asking only what is the most popular electric guitar we could just look at sales figures. I would say Strats in all their variants (copies, squires, starcasters, MIA, MIM, MIJ, MIK, MIC etc...I think it would have to be the Strat.

These days, I'd guess Pearl River, also known as Kapok. There are nearly a billion Chinese that don't have a guitar yet, and some companies are busy rectifying that.

It's a toss up between Strat and flying V.

Pretty sure the Strat is the most copied, with LPs running a very close 2nd.

Of course V's have the image - great for the pose , and used by guitarists ranging from Hendrix to the KLF (Voodoo Child at half speed anyone?), but there are several cons to V's that put the Strat firmly in the lead (ie. balance re weight distribution , build quality etc.)

Black Rick makes me think of John Lennon, then Tom Petty, in that order.

I wonder if Hank Marvin's red strat is up there (there's a guitar that got worldwide exposure, and was front and centre, it was a big big deal. I mean, I think of him right away when I see one.

Same deal with Dick dale's sparkly lefty Strat.

then there's Wayne Kramer from MC5 , I know people who have no idea who they were, that know that guitar.

There's so many.

When I hear "red strat", I think of David Gilmour, not Hank Marvin.

I'm not sure how well known Dick Dale (or even surf rock) is around the world. While I know he was a great influence for many bands and artists, I didn't know he plays a sparkly strat. Checking with Google, it appears he played a white one back when he was big?

A Precision Bass is an electric bass guitar. Still a guitar. Just not an electric Spanish guitar.

I know. It also depends on what you are into, influenced by, grew up with, got turned onto etc etc. I would think anyone in the world that would see a beat up sunburst Strat would instantly think of SRV. But I am sure there are more "average" people that know of Hendrix and EVH. Now a white strat tends to remind me of Hendrix even though he played other colors. But most people might not associate a white strat to hendrix but still could objectively be iconic as it is such a popular guitar body style. Of course a sunburst LP is Jimmy Page (maybe Slash to a younger generation) and of course we all know the first person that comes to mind when we see a dark SG.

It is funny when I watch youtubes of guitar reviews whenever it is an SG they play AC/DC, a strat they play Hendrix, a Les Paul they play guns and Rose or Zeppelin. I guess most of us are guilty of that. I once picked up a ukulele and the first thing I went for was a Tiny Tim song. I wonder if I picked up a banjo if I would go for Roy Clark 8) ... in my dreams.
