Personally, I think the single most iconic guitar is this one:

Image

I don't even have to say who it belongs to. You all know. A huge number of non musicians know. It doesn't even matter what it says on the headstock. You could paint any guitar this color, and it will be recognized.

If I have a dead on accurate Jimi Strat, an average person most likely will see a white guitar and not put the person to the guitar. Les Paul, SG, Es 335, Tele, you name it. It won't be as recognized as this one. That is, unless you paint it this color. And even then, a non musician still won't know the actual model or manufacturer.

In which case you can say its so iconic, it doesn't need a guitar manufacturer branded to it.

The number one answer you'll always get is that it's "A Van Halen guitar."

I think we may have a winner...... however is it okay to place that guitar into the "stratocaster" category? I know he did his first from a Charvel boogie body and then Ibanez etc but really now.... those are iconic strat bodies.

I can give you Elvis as possibly the most iconic rock star in history but I never looked at any particular electric guitar and thought "Elvis"...I am not even so sure he could play. I think on stage he was "Milli Vanilling" that part. However for a bit of trivia one of his actual guitar players has been spotted playing a paisley tele which is pretty iconic in itself to Fender history buffs.

I asked SWMBO, and she did not know. She said it was ugly.
She recognizes a brown SG, though, from "that naked guy in AC/DC". My "What about Tony Iommi" was met with a polite blink.

On a worldwide scale, I would still bet on the EVH.

A legitimate poll requires asking more then one person :D

If you want domestic happiness, make sure you never ask more than one person...

Anyhow, it sure must differ a lot based on what people grew up with, when and where.
EVH was big for a time, but mostly in the US. He's had thirteen US Billboard #1s, but not a single one of those ever topped the charts in Europe. EVH was a largely American phenomenon, and not nearly as well known overseas as, say, Queen, which held the European billboards with "I Want to Break Free" when "Jump" topped the US charts. "Jump" only hit #34 on the Dutch Europarade chart, the main European Billboard of the 80s. He briefly made it to #7 in the UK, but that's still far from the top.
So, no, I don't think the EVH guitar is going to be the one most known world wide. He's just not that famous outside the US. Brian May and his "Red Special" is probably more known.

Among guitar fans, May's and EVH's are equally iconic and recognizable, but I gotta believe EVH gets the nod among the general public.

SRV's #1 and Rory's are right up there among us guitar nuts.
